About us:

Istana Malaysia Restaurant is fast paced food business specializing in Malaysian fusion cuisine with strong focus on Malaysian flavor based in heart of Wellington CBD.

We are looking for skilled Chef or Cook who can deliver consistent Malaysian taste, particularly in sauce preparation, marination and high-volume service environment.

You will be joining a great team of busy Chefs and others who prepare and make some of the best Authentic Malaysian meals in Wellington.

Professional qualification is an advantage but not essential. You must have a minimum of 2 to 3 years of cooking experience in a commercial kitchen.

Duties will include but not limited to:

  • Maintain the quality of food by following best food handling practices ensuring food safety is strictly followed.
  • Planning venues, estimating food and labor costs, ordering food supplies
  • Ability to cook multiple dishes at the same time while maintaining consistent quality
  • Monitoring quality of dishes throughout process discussing food prep requirements and issues with manager and kitchen staff
  • Maintain the restaurant kitchen to an excellent hygiene and safety standard as per ‘Hygiene Certification’ status.
  • Preparing multiple dishes while maintaining consistency in taste, timing and presentation.
  • Experience handling multiple orders simultaneously in a high-volume kitchen
  • Work across multiple kitchen stations (prep, grill, assembly) maintain food quality, portion control, and presentation standards
  • Ability to work independently during peak service periods
  • Knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards
  • Order, stock-take, and check the quality of incoming stock and ensure the fresh food is stored at the right temperature.
  • Carry out the full range of cooking tasks from preparing authentic Malaysian food and roti from scratch.
  • Maintain a high level of staff professionalism. This includes correct uniform, general presentation, personal hygiene, and encouraging the “right” attitude.
  • You must be able to work under pressure and in a high-stress environment.
  • Cook assisting the Chef in preparing and cooking high-quality dishes ensuring that all ingredients are fresh and of the highest quality
  • Keeping up to date with the latest culinary trends and techniques
  • Maintaining a clean and hygienic kitchen environment
  • Adhering to all health and safety regulations
  • Assisting with menu planning and costing.
