Trentham, Upper Hutt

Spectrum Care provides support to people with intellectual disabilities in several location across the North Island. We have a beautiful house in Trentham, Upper Hutt where two women and one man in their mid-late 30's live happily together. We are looking for a warm, calm, organised person to lead our team, manage house related coordination and administration, provide hands on support, and be a great communicator with the wider Spectrum team, families and other involved networks.

Our current House Leader leaves us in early Feb to return to the South Island and she will be greatly missed. The person who steps into her role will need to bring an insightful empathic nature, be vigilant, motivated, and motivating, and be able to connect with all flatmates, families and staff.

You'll need to gain not only their trust and confidence, but that of their families, by being a great communicator, being transparent, supportive and understanding, and working in respectful partnership with them. The flatmates have their own interests and personalities, so you'll need to get to know what is important to them and what they need from you.

They may enjoy swimming, gym, movies, going out for a meal, music, crafts, library, puzzles and computer games- sometimes they may want company and liveliness, sometimes peace and quiet. The flatmates need some hands on support for daily living, like bathing and showering, continence support, and also household tasks like making tasty healthy meals and general cleaning.

They communicate in a variety of ways; some words, gestures, vocalisations, facial expressions, and some communication devices and tools.

A key skill is being intuitive and patient, so you can really tune in to what's going on for each person, and respond to them. This is very much about making this new house into their home for this next phase of their life. With your empathy and initiative, these wonderful people will continue to lead good lives, enjoying and exploring whatever their neighbourhood has to offer and keeping connected with their whanau and friends.

What you'll need:

  • Experience supporting people who intellectual disabilities to live good lives
  • The ability to communicate effectively and supportively with flatmates, their families and the team including your manager
  • The ability to lead, coach and develop team members, and to troubleshoot
  • Ability to coordinate interesting lives, complete admin tasks, and develop rosters
  • A full New Zealand driver's licence (essential)
  • Commitment to work towards a Health and Wellbeing Level 3 or 4 qualification or other relevant qualification- we will help with this
  • The ability to use a computer effectively, including programs such as Word, Internet Explorer, and email
