ABOUT US:We are a well-established Thai restaurant in Wellington, known for our authentic flavours in a professional kitchen. We are looking for a reliable and experienced Sous Chef to support the Head Chef and help lead our kitchen operations.
ABOUT YOU:We are currently seeking a skilled and enthusiastic Sous Chef with experience in Thai or Asian cuisine to join our team. The ideal candidate will be confident preparing a range of traditional, modern and fusion-style Thai dishes, and bring reliability, consistency and strong kitchen knowledge.
A formal qualification in Thai cookery is an advantage, but not essential for those with strong practical experience. Applicants should have at least 3 years of relevant work experience and a sound understanding of Thai and Asian ingredients.
A good grasp of regional Thai flavour profiles including the distinct styles of the north, northeast, central and southern regions, will be highly regarded.
THE ROLE:As Sous Chef, you will be the second-in-command in the kitchen. You’ll help oversee day-to-day operations, lead services when the Head Chef is off duty, and ensure consistency across all sections. This role suits someone with strong leadership, solid Thai or Asian cuisine skills, and experience managing staff in a fast-paced commercial kitchen.
KEY TASKS: Lead the kitchen team when the Head Chef is not on duty
Supervise section chefs, cooks, and kitchen hands to ensure efficient and consistent operationsAssist in designing and developing seasonal menus and daily specials
Prepare and cook dishes during service, particularly in high-volume periods or to cover absences
Ensure all dishes meet presentation and quality standards before they leave the pass
Manage kitchen workflow and timing, communicating with both front-of-house and kitchen teams
Oversee food cost controls using Excel, stocktake tools, and supplier coordination
Maintain the Food Control Plan and ensure compliance with all hygiene and food safety regulations
Liaise with suppliers, check deliveries, and resolve stock or credit issues
Provide on-the-job training and support for new team members
Support the Head Chef with screening and interviewing potential new kitchen staff
Monitor kitchen performance and address any staffing or service issues promptly

POSITIONS: 1 Position Available
HOURS: Minimum 30 Hours, Maximum 40 Hours
DAYS: Rotating Roster including weekends
EXPERIENCE and/or QUALIFICATION:At least 3 years of related work experience (Sound experience in Thai or Asian Cuisine). Not required if you can meet the qualification requirement.
AND/OR
A relevant qualification/certification in Cookery/Culinary, preferably in Thai/Asian Cuisine at Level 5 or higher. Not required if you can meet the work experience requirement.
