Smart Home / Automation Technician
Smarta Automation & AV is growing, and we’re looking for a capable Smart Home / Automation Technician to join our team.
We design, install and support premium smart home, automation, AV, networking and security systems across Queenstown and the Southern Lakes. Our work is focused on high-end residential homes where quality, attention to detail and a tidy finish matter.
This role would ideally suit someone with experience in smart home, AV, automation, networking, electrical, control systems, security, or a similar technical installation field. We’re not looking for a brand-new junior at this stage, but we are open to training the right person if they already have some related experience, a strong technical mindset and the right attitude.
You’ll be part of a small team working on interesting projects from start to finish, not just doing the same repetitive task every day.
About the Role
You’ll be involved across a range of premium residential technology projects, including:
Smart home automation systemsAudio visual systems
Home networking and Wi-Fi
Lighting control and control systems
Security, access control and CCTV
Pre-wiring, fit-off and equipment installation
Rack building, testing, commissioning and system setup
Fault finding and ongoing support
This is hands-on, varied work across high-end homes and projects. The role can grow over time depending on your experience, strengths and interests.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for someone with related experience and a genuine interest in smart home technology, automation and quality installation work.
Experience in any of the following would be an advantage:- Networking, Wi-Fi or data systems
- Smart home automation
- AV installation or commissioning
- Control systems such as Control4, Crestron, Lutron, Dynalite, C-Bus or similar
- Security, access control or CCTV
- Electrical or structured cabling
- Rack building, testing or fault finding
You don’t need to know every system already. Training can be provided for the right candidate, but you’ll need to bring a strong practical skill set, good problem-solving ability and a willingness to keep learning.
You’ll Ideally Have- Related experience in AV, automation, networking, electrical, security or technical installation work
- Good practical on-site installation skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Good problem-solving ability
- Confidence using tools and working in finished homes
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- A professional attitude on site and with clients
- A genuine interest in technology and quality workmanship
- Full New Zealand driver licence

This may include supplier training, product training and industry pathways through organisations such as CEDIA as the smart home industry continues to develop recognised technician qualifications.
