Purpose of the PositionThe Electrical Engineering Technician is responsible for the development, installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of security systems. The role supports engineers and project managers to ensure systems are designed and implemented to specification and compliant with all relevant regulations and standards.
Key Responsibilities- Design and planning of electrical security and automation systems, including wiring diagrams and layout schematics taking into account client needs.
- Construct, install, and test security system components such as alarm panels, CCTV cameras, sensors, cabling, access control systems, and related circuitry as per assessment of how to meet the client expectations of the level and type of security system needed.
- Diagnose and repair faults in security systems using appropriate test equipment and tools and build good relationships with clients in providing a responsive service from the company.
- Prepare quotes for clients based on accurate estimates of materials and time needed to complete each project.
- Perform performance tests, record and analyse data, and compile technical reports on system function and reliability. Carrying out repairs or maintenance as needed to ensure security or automation system is working correctly.
- Evaluate existing systems and recommend technical improvements or upgrades following site assessments.
- Ensure all installations comply with New Zealand electrical, safety, and building regulations
- Provide Certificate of Compliance (CoC), Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC) and supporting documentation for all security system installations and upgrades in compliance with regulatory safety standards.
- Prepare cost and material estimates for proposed systems and modifications.
- Maintain detailed records of installations, service visits, fault reports, and compliance checks.
- Provide technical advice and support to clients, contractors, and team members.
- Travel to client sites for installation and maintenance as required.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:- Level 6 (or higher) Diploma or Certificate in Electrical Engineering (NZQA-assessed if international) OR Registered as Electrical Engineer with the Electrical Workers Registration Board
- Current holder of Certificate of Approval (COA) issued by the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority (PSPLA). This is essential as you will be working with client security which includes sensitive information about their security systems.
- Minimum 6 months experience in electrical engineering projects including work on projects to design, install and test electrical components to read technical drawings and schematics as many of our commercial installations are for existing buildings.
- Experience working with security and automation systems
- Excellent communication, client service, and documentation skills
- Ability to work independently and travel to project sites across regions
- Competitive remuneration, based on skills and experience from $31.66 - $35 depending on skills and experience
