The Role
We are on the lookout for a passionate and experienced Kitchen Hand to play an important part in supporting our chefs and catering team by maintaining cleanliness, assisting with food preparation for events and off-site catering.
Job Description
The Employee’s position of Kitchen Hand will consist of but not be limited to the following duties: Cleaning & Hygiene
- Maintain a clean, tidy, and organised kitchen at all times in accordance with food safety and hygiene standards.
- Wash and sanitise dishes, utensils, cookware, and kitchen equipment efficiently and thoroughly.
- Clean kitchen surfaces, floors, storage areas, and rubbish bins as directed by senior kitchen staff.
- Follow and complete daily and weekly cleaning schedules as required by the Employer.
- Assist chefs with basic food preparation tasks such as peeling, chopping, portioning, or assembling ingredients.
- Restock service areas and ensure ingredients, crockery, and equipment are readily available.
- Assist with receiving, unpacking, and storing deliveries in line with stock rotation procedures.
- Follow directions from the Head Chef, Sous Chef, or Chef de Partie to support smooth kitchen operations.
- Comply with all food hygiene and safety procedures as required by the Food Act 2014 and the Employer’s policies.
- Use cleaning chemicals, equipment, and machinery safely and in accordance with training.
- Report any maintenance, equipment faults, or potential safety hazards immediately to a supervisor.
- Maintain high personal hygiene and wear the appropriate uniform and protective gear at all times.
- Work cooperatively and respectfully with all kitchen and front-of-house staff to ensure efficient service.
- Communicate clearly with chefs and colleagues regarding kitchen needs, stock levels, or issues during service.
- Assist team members with tasks as required, especially during busy periods.
- Dispose of waste appropriately and in accordance with recycling and food waste procedures.
- Minimise wastage and handle all stock and equipment with care.
- Assist with stock rotation, labelling, and general kitchen organisation.
- Perform any other reasonable tasks requested by the Employer that are consistent with the Employee’s role and skills.
- Represent Southsea Catering in a professional manner and contribute positively to the kitchen
- Previous kitchen or hospitality experience preferred
- Strong work ethic and a positive, team-focused attitude
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, public holidays & travel off-site event locations
- Reliable, punctual, and well organised
- A genuine passion for hospitality, people, and delivering memorable experiences
- Calm under pressure with great problem-solving skills
- Full driver’s license preferred
