WHERE
Kinburn Farming Limited (KFL) is a sheep and cattle finishing operation based in Hawke’s Bay, with a combined total effective area of approximately 1458 hectares in and around the Poukawa area. The farming business is governed by the KFL Board and runs under the guidance of the highly regarded Business Manager and Operations Manager, who is an equity partner within the business.
A newly established Operations Team Leader/2IC role has been created to assist the Operations Manager with the increased scale of the business and the introduction of this role will enable more direct leadership on the ground for the farming team.The owners have a proven track record of developing their employees and encouraging them to learn and grow their knowledge base.
The farming operation carries 20,000su, with a 65:35 sheep to cattle ratio, and is GAP Assured allowing the supply of premium lamb to Atkins Ranch, the grazing and finishing of Wagyu Steers for Firstlight Foods, alongside their Friesian bull finishing operation.
WHAT
Reporting to the Operations Manager, this Operations Team Leader/2IC role will assist in all aspects of the business to ensure a sustainable operation for KFL. It is a hands-on farming role with specific responsibilities in assisting with team leadership, employee professional development and mentoring, and also in the day-to-day allocation of tasks.
You will help to design, implement, update and monitor the overall farm plan in conjunction with the Operations Manager while also assisting with feed budgeting, including monitoring grass covers. This data will be utilised to assist with designing and organising daily and weekly stock movements and management.
Assisting the Operations Manager, you will help to ensure stock target weights are achieved in line with planned expectations, best practice animal health and welfare is followed, and that all farming and business activities operate within regulatory requirements and market expectations (e.g. GAP Accreditation) to achieve sustainability.

WHO
We seek an individual keen to work within a younger team who will form a strong working relationship with the Operations Manager and who will enjoy the responsibility of supporting two shepherds and a fencer on a daily basis.
The owners envisage this opportunity will suit an experienced person with the right attitude looking to be supported and grown into this role or someone more experienced who can step straight in. There is scope within the business for this young team to all develop over time together.
As well as hands-on farming experience and strong stockmanship skills you will ideally:- Be an experienced or aspiring team leader with the ability to lead, organise and develop people.
- Display technical competence in pastoral farming with a mixture of practical experience and academic training.
- Be equipped with a team of capable working dogs.
- Demonstrate good computer skills and familiar with the use of technological tools for management.
- Be skilled in the measurement of grass covers, feed budgeting and implementing stock rotations.
- Bring animal health identification and treatment knowledge.
- Have capability with general skills and a quad bike safety course is desirable.
- Demonstrate an attitude of continual improvement and willingness to learn, change and adapt.
- Have strong integrity, honesty, pride in your work and be able to take directions from others.
- Contribute to building a positive team culture and marketplace perception of the business.
- Be physically fit and energetic.
- Have a full, clean New Zealand Driver’s Licence.
