This role will provide you the privilege to be a part of the pathway for our deceased and their bereaved family / whānau and contribute to the health of our community and the justice system.
This is a permanent, full-time position available working Monday to Friday with rostered on-call duties.

You will work in a team with other forensic technicians to assist the Forensic Pathologists with a wide variety of post-mortem examinations including cases of sudden natural deaths, suspicious deaths and homicides, as well as undertake other day-to-day operational duties to support the service.

You will also participate in the in-house post-mortem CT scanning service, as well as assist with hospital post-mortems and the perinatal (non-coronial) post-mortem service.
We provide a comprehensive forensic pathology service including the management of deceased persons / tūpapaku, storage, medical imaging (CT scan and photography), and complex medico-legal investigation.

As part of the job, you will be exposed to forensic and post-mortem material and images, medical reports, and mortuary and laboratory equipment and environments.About the Team/Service/ LocationThe Department of Forensic Pathology is an IANZ and NAME accredited facility.

We are one of a handful of forensic facilities outside of the USA to be accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME) We are the largest and the busiest forensic pathology department in New Zealand, conducting over 1000 post-mortems per year (mostly full post-mortems) and approximately 220 perinatal post-mortems.

The department is involved in the training of pathology registrars, as well as forensic mortuary staff, including from other centres.
Our staff are also provide forensic assistance in national and international mass disasters.
We are the only forensic facility in New Zealand with a dedicated CT scanner.

  • you will need to have the relevant registration with Medical Sciences Council of NZ www.mscouncil.org.nz as a Mortuary Technician.
You will have previous experience of working in a Forensic Pathology department/mortuary either in New Zealand or overseas and will have knowledge of the day-to-day requirements of a busy Forensic Pathology department.

Preferably, you will be experienced in post-mortem photography, as well as assisting in homicide and suspicious death post-mortems.

If you are not yet qualified
  • you can be employed as a trainee for a fixed term training position and you will be expected to work towards the requirements and sit the Qualified Medical Laboratory Technician (QMLT) examination when requirements are met.
To be considered for the trainee role, you will be eager to start a career as a Forensic Technician and ideally have experience in a relevant profession.
