About the RoleWe are looking for a dynamic and experienced Senior Medical Officer to join our Acute care team in the Mental Health and Addiction Service at Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital.
This role will work with teams in the community and in our inpatient unit to support patients in the acute phases of their illness, combining early assertive intervention in the community with effective hospital admissions where necessary. While this is a general psychiatric role, the clinical load is varied and interesting and by necessity engages with all major subspecialty interests and the wider clinical hospital and primary care teams.
There are opportunities to influence models of care which are responsive to our community needs, as well as helping grow our future workforce by engaging in teaching and other leadership activities. Mental Health and Addiction services in Hawkes Bay are centred around two large community teams, with a Kaupapa Maori mental health service provided by an NGO partner and satellite teams in the smaller population centres.

Within the service are Child and Family, Home Based Treatment, Maternal Mental Health, Te Ara Manapou, Consultation-Liaison, Emergency Mental Health, Older Persons and Addiction services. The Mental health and addiction service have a robust Peer Review Group and you will have access to CPD activities to meet ongoing registration requirements About the Team/Service/ LocationPsychiatrists within Mental Health and Addictions teams play a critical role in assessing and treating and monitoring patients with serious mental illnesses and associated co-existing conditions.

The role requires a combination of clinical expertise, the ability to work cooperatively in teams and the ability to exercise clinical leadership. Key responsibilities include: * Clinical functions: This encompasses comprehensive mental health assessment and treatment.
  • Medico-legal functions: Psychiatrists will be required to take on the role of Responsible Clinician under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992.
  • Collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary teams, cultural support staff, families and management to ensure equitable, safe care of patients
