Are you passionate about the environment and conservation, and skilled at bringing people together? Do you enjoy coordinating activities and helping volunteers make a real difference for our native wildlife?We're looking for an organised, people-focused Volunteer and Social Media Coordinator to join our mahi of restoring Pirongia maunga's native biodiversity. This role offers the perfect opportunity to help lead our volunteer coordination efforts while gaining valuable experience in the operations of our established conservation organisation.
About Our Mahi
Pirongia Te Aroaro o Kahu Restoration Society has been working since 2002 to bring our maunga back to life. Having successfully delivered our previous 20-year vision with kokako reintroduction, we have now set our vision for the next 20 years to 2045.Since 2002 our society has invested over 100,000 volunteer hours in pest control, species reintroduction, and habitat restoration. Through this mahi we have been able to reintroduce key species such as kokako, pitoitoi (robin), NZ Mistletoe and restore other taonga species such as titipounamu (rifleman) and Dactylanthus.
Our next major milestone will see the reintroduction of kiwi. Our mahi is achieved through hundreds of dedicated volunteers across multiple conservation project areas, from Pirongia to Pureora Forest Park.
What You'll Be Doing
Your primary focus will be:- Coordinating volunteers and managing volunteer databases
- Supporting team leaders with recruitment, training, and retention
- Managing our website, social media, and quarterly newsletters
- Organising promotional activities and community outreach events
- Maintaining volunteer participation records and recognising contributions
You'll start by focusing primarily on volunteer coordination and communications, with opportunities to gradually take on broader administrative responsibilities as systems develop and your skills grow.
You'll also provide administrative support to our Operations Coordinator across:- Project coordination and stakeholder liaison
- Grant applications and reporting
- Health and safety compliance
- Committee support and other general administration duties
This dual focus offers growth opportunities while ensuring operational continuity for our organisation.
Who We're Looking For
Essential:- Self-motivated with strong organisational skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Experience with databases (Excel/Google Sheets), social media, and basic website management
- Cultural awareness and some understanding of tikanga Maori
- Genuine interest in great conservation outcomes
- Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of volunteers and stakeholders
- Experience in volunteer coordination or community engagement
- Project management experience
- Ecological science experience
- Design or marketing skills
- Presentation experience
- Flexible mix of Envirocentre (Pirongia) and home-based work
- Attendance of monthly committee meetings (2nd Thursday evening, 6-9pm) if required
- If able to, participation in occasional weekend activities and community events with advance notice
