Pay Range: $30 to $35 per hour (depending on experience)
Days: 11 days on, 3 days off roster

Hours: Guaranteed at least 30 hours per week

The Company:

Our client is a well-run and progressive dairy farming operation focused on efficiency, animal health, and sustainable practices. Situated on a 154ha property milking 600 cows across two herds, they are seeking motivated Herd Managers to support the day-to-day running of the farm and contribute to a positive team culture.

Key Responsibilities:
As a Herd Manager, You will primarily be responsible for one herd, with shared duties across both herds during rostered time off. Your main responsibilities will include overseeing milking, herd health, feed management, and general farm operations.

You will play an active role in supervising and training junior staff, maintaining high standards of animal welfare, and ensuring smooth and efficient farm performance.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Carrying out daily milking operations safely and efficiently, ensuring milk quality and hygiene standards are consistently met.
  • Monitoring herd health, diagnosing and treating minor ailments, and maintaining accurate treatment and production records.
  • Managing calving, calf rearing, and assisting with breeding and mating programs.
  • Implementing feed and pasture management plans, including break feeding and supplement feeding.
  • Overseeing effluent management, irrigation, and compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Training and supervising junior staff, promoting good communication and a positive team culture.
  • Operating farm machinery and vehicles safely and maintaining them in good working order.
  • Identifying hazards, following all health and safety procedures, and maintaining accurate farm records.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • At least two years of proven relevant work experience, or a relevant qualification at/above NZQF Level 3 (or equivalent).
  • Sound knowledge of animal health, calving, and reproduction practices.
  • Experience with pasture management, feed allocation, and environmental compliance.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Competency in operating tractors, motorbikes, and other farm machinery.
  • A proactive attitude, good time management, and the ability to work independently.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
  • Must have a clean police report with no charges pending.
