Job summary:

You will be coordinating operations and logistics which includes managing our 50 or so volunteer mechanics, running ‘open sessions’ -where community members can come and select a bike and also a myriad of other tasks all whilst fostering Bike Hub’s culture of having fun and being productive to provide a valuable community service.

Who we are:
Bike Hub Nelson is a charity that fixes up donated bikes with a crew of volunteer mechanics and gives them away on a koha/donation basis to members of the community. We work with organisations such as the Red Cross refugee service, Salvation Army and Housing NZ.

Since its inception in 2022 Bike Hub Nelson has rehomed over 3,500 bicycles. We also run bike maintenance courses and service a fleet of bikes in primary schools.

About the role:

The driving force behind the success of Bike Hub is the coordinator who brings all the ingredients together and makes it a smooth-running operation with a massive impact. The coordinator will be a motivated and autonomous individual, an independent contractor reporting to the Steering Committee of Bike Hub Nelson.

The working week is 20 to 30 hours, and the initial term is 12 months, renewable.

What you’ll do:
  • Lead our operations: Oversee daily tasks, run our popular twice-weekly public sessions, and keep everything organised.
  • Inspire our volunteers: Be the go-to person for our team of over 50 passionate volunteer mechanics and staff, fostering a fun and productive culture.
  • Maintain & build community connections: Nurture relationships with our amazing stakeholders like the Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, NZ Police, Red Cross, Salvation Army and the wider community.
  • Manage our message: Handle day-to-day inquiries and use your social media skills to share our stories and engage with our growing online community of over 4,300 followers.
  • Drive our growth: Play a key role in promoting the Bike Hub via media coverage and events.
  • Seek funding: Engage with our sponsors and donors, assist with funding applications.

Who we are looking for:
Someone who knows the simple magic of a bike and understands the impact that owning a bike can have on a person’s life. You don’t need any particular qualifications or even to be able to fix a bike, but you do need to be enthusiastic about bikes!

We expect you to be great with a diverse range of people and be able to work independently with a high degree of integrity. Experience with social media would be a plus.
