THE GIG:
Our client is a specialist civil construction and maintenance company involved in road maintenance and construction, commercial and residential developments, drainage, civil construction of structures including bridges, retaining walls and underpass installation, and many other general contracting activities.
Being based in Cromwell but with work around the greater Central Otago Region, they have a full forward workload and offer a great working environment, plus opportunities to upskill and develop your career for the future .
This role will have you prepare accurate, competitive, and comprehensive cost estimates and tender submissions for civil construction projects, supporting the Contract Managers in securing and delivering profitable contracts.

Key Responsibilities
Tendering and Estimating- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and tender documentation to develop project estimates.
- Prepare detailed take-offs and quantity measurements for civil infrastructure projects (e.g., roading, drainage, earthworks, structures).
- Source and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes.
- Compile cost estimates for labour, plant, materials, and subcontractors.
- Apply appropriate productivity rates, risk contingencies, and construction methodologies.
- Consulting with company other managers to generate competitive innovative project submissions
- Support Contract Managers and Business Development teams in tender submissions.
- Prepare tender schedules, preliminary construction programs, and methodology inputs.
- Contribute to non-price attributes, ensuring alignment with project requirements and delivery team capabilities.
- Participate in bid reviews, pricing workshops, and tender closeout meetings.
- Assist Contract Managers with pricing variations, contract claims, and remeasurements.
- Monitor awarded project budgets vs. estimates to inform future pricing accuracy.
- Support post-tender negotiations and clarifications with clients and consultants.
- Collaborate with engineers, planners, and procurement teams to refine cost inputs.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market rates, material trends, and construction innovations.
- Maintain estimating systems, pricing libraries, and historical cost databases.
YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFUL IF YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING:
- Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or Construction Management (preferred).
- Minimum 3-5 years experience in estimating or quantity surveying within civil construction.
- Experience pricing works in roading, drainage, siteworks, or infrastructure development.
- Knowledge of New Zealand construction standards, market rates, and health & safety requirements.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Benchmark, Excel) and Microsoft Project.
- Solid understanding of NZS series and other standard forms of contract.
- Strong communication and stakeholder coordination abilities.
- Attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple bids under time pressure.
