Au Mahi | What You Will Do

Working under the guidance of experienced mechanical fitters you'll have hands-on learning opportunities to develop technical skills, gain industry knowledge and qualifications, while contributing to the operational efficiency and safety of the university's infrastructure.

Key responsibilities will include assisting with the installation, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, and conveyor systems; supporting routine inspections, preventative maintenance and troubleshooting; and dismantling, fitting, and assembling mechanical components to ensure proper performance.

You will complete a structured training program, combining on-the-job training with formal education modules.

Mou | Who You Are

You will have a genuine interest in mechanical systems, equipment, and industrial machinery as well as:

  • ability to work collaboratively in a team and take direction
  • strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • good communication skills and an eagerness to learn
  • NCEA Level 2 or equivalent
  • physical fitness to perform tasks, including lifting and moving heavy equipment
  • willingness to work in industrial environments, such as noisy, hot, or confined spaces
  • good computer skills
  • basic understanding of workplace safety practices
  • an alignment with our organisation's values and culture, promoting a positive and inclusive work environment.

The following attributes are highly desirable but not essential:

  • Technical coursework in mechanics or engineering
  • Pre-trade completion
  • Current full NZ Driver's licence

You will be a part of the wider Te Ratonga Whakahaere Paenga | Facilities Management team, who provide and coordinate all estate and facility-related services at a strategic, tactical and operational level across our entire campus. UC is made up of approximately 150 buildings across 87 hectares, covering a Gross Floor Area of 223,000m2.
