About the Role
Zeal Recruitment is seeking compassionate, reliable, and culturally responsive Mental Health Support Workers and Healthcare Assistants to join our growing team.
This role provides essential support to service users within inpatient mental health services and, at times, within community settings. You will be working predominantly in hospital-based mental health environments supporting vulnerable patients requiring person-centred care, observation, and recovery-focused support.
As a casual staff member, you will work on an as-needed basis across a range of hospital units and services. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking flexible employment while making a meaningful difference within the mental health sector in Tamaki Makaurau.
Key Responsibilities- Provide compassionate, person-centred support in accordance with individual care plans.
- Work closely with vulnerable patients in both one-on-one and group support settings.
- Maintain patient safety through active observation and engagement.
- Assist with personal cares and activities of daily living while promoting dignity and independence.
- Support therapeutic programmes, group activities, and community outings where required.
- Observe, document, and report changes in patients’ presentation, behaviour, or wellbeing.
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and culturally responsive environment.
- Communicate effectively with nurses, allied health professionals, support staff, patients, and whanau.
- Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Adhere to all workplace health and safety policies, procedures, and professional standards.
- Be physically capable of supporting patients safely within clinical environments.
About You

- Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
- Availability to work a minimum of 3–4 shifts per week (mandatory).
- Willingness to work weekends and pick up additional shifts when required.
Essential Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Hold a Level 3 Health and Wellbeing Certificate and currently be working towards a Level 4 Mental Health and Addiction qualification, OR
- Hold a Level 4 Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction, OR
- Hold a Level 4 Healthcare Assistance qualification.
Preferred Experience
Previous experience in any of the following areas is highly desirable:
- Mental health support work
- Healthcare assistance
- Disability support
- Community support services
- Social services or related fields
- Flexible casual shifts (AM, PM, and Night shifts)
- Opportunities across multiple mental health facilities
- Supportive and inclusive team environment
- Ongoing training and professional development opportunities
