Ministry Leader for Children

Taupo Baptist Church is seeking a relational and organised leader to guide its growing children’s ministry. This person will lead and empower a team of volunteers and staff, uniting them around the church’s vision to disciple children in love.

They will support parents and caregivers, helping to build a strong intergenerational community. The role involves overseeing and adapting Scripture-based curriculum to meet the needs of different age groups. Teaching experience in the primary sector or church ministry is essential.

The Leader for children has responsibility for the Children’s Ministry and reports to the Senior Pastor. The responsibility of this role is to direct and to oversee the implementation of Taupo Baptist Church vision as it relates to children and their families, in particular, ensuring our church is a welcoming and hospitable community for all those involved.

The key focus is on implementing a dynamic children’s programme of relational discipleship. In addition, parental support, and encouragement of intergenerational community also feature.

Relational Discipleship of children
  • Foster an environment of respectful, loving enjoyment of God and his ways.
  • Oversee the operation of the Sunday discipleship programme for ages up to Year 6 (possibly Years 7&8 in due course although this is currently overseen by the youth pastor). 10am till 12pm.
  • Choose or create a curriculum that will serve the goal of loving relational discipleship.
  • Create home-packs that will enable parents/caregivers to engage with Scripture at home as families.
  • Partner with parents/caregivers (in collaboration with senior leader) by providing parenting courses and other activities that will help parents to disciple their children.
  • Plan and facilitate 4 family (intergenerational) services per year, using the strengths and contributions of others within the church.
  • Oversee creche operations including a roster of people to welcome and supervise.
Recruitment and Training of Staff and Volunteers
  • Recognise and develop fledgling gifts in staff, parents/caregivers and volunteers.
  • Ensure all volunteers are adequately screened and police vetted and records of this are kept on hand.
  • Teach the teachers how to train their volunteers.
  • Train staff and volunteers through workshops, educational materials, study, as required.
  • Foster an environment of improving and upskilling – incremental improvement.
  • Train staff and volunteers in pastoral care of children and adults and child-management
  • Train staff and volunteers in situational awareness, style of delivery, and self-awareness
  • Train staff and volunteers in prayerfulness and reliance on the Word of God for effective ministry
  • Coordinate meetings with fellow teachers, parents and volunteers to brainstorm new ideas.
Welcoming and building Connections
  • ‘Work the room’ before and after Sunday sessions, introducing themselves to new children and parents.
  • Check in with parents, especially those new to church - do they have questions or feedback?
  • Plan, champion (with senior leader) and communicate family-friendly social events (shared lunches etc).
  • Show care for those families with significant events happening in their lives.
  • Meet with senior pastor fortnightly or as arranged.
Marketing and Promotions
  • Update social media with stories of Sunday activities (in communication with Office Manager).
  • Promote special events using church newsletters, social media, and announcements (in communication with Office Manager).
Policies and Protocols
  • Ensure Child Safety Policy is being adhered to.
  • Ensure Health and Safety Policy is being adhered to.
  • Ensure Privacy Policy is being adhered to.
