Hummingbird has been proudly serving Wellington for the past year since re-opening due to earthquake strengthening and has been operating for over 20 years.

Hummingbird is a vibrant bar, restaurant, and function venue located in the heart of Courtenay Place. We’ve built a reputation for warm hospitality, creative cocktails, and a lively yet sophisticated atmosphere where locals and visitors come together to eat, drink, and celebrate.

We’re now looking for an experienced General Manager to lead the next chapter of Hummingbird’s growth — someone who thrives in the fast-paced world of hospitality, inspires teams, and brings both operational discipline and creative energy to the role.

Key Responsibilities

-Lead the Team: Inspire, train, and support a passionate front and back-of-house team to deliver exceptional service every time.
  • Operational Excellence: Oversee daily operations across the bar, restaurant, and function spaces — ensuring consistency, efficiency, and quality.
-Financial Performance: Manage budgets, control costs, and drive revenue through smart decision-making and hands-on leadership.
  • Customer Experience: Champion a culture of genuine hospitality, ensuring every guest leaves impressed and eager to return.
  • Events & Functions: Coordinate private events and functions with precision, maintaining Hummingbird’s reputation for seamless execution.
  • Compliance: Ensure all operations meet New Zealand’s health, safety, and licensing requirements.

-Community & Brand Building: Continue to strengthen Hummingbird’s connection with Wellington’s dining and nightlife scene, positioning it as a go-to destination for great food, drinks, and atmosphere.

What We’re Looking For
  • Proven experience as a General Manager or Venue Manager in a busy restaurant, bar, or function venue.
  • A confident leader with excellent communication and people skills.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience with budgeting, wage and COGS management.
  • Passion for food, beverage, and the art of creating memorable guest experiences.
  • Understanding of New Zealand’s hospitality compliance and licensing requirements.
