Nursery Team Leader

The Role

As Team Leader you will be the senior person in the nursery leading by example, keeping our plants healthy and beautifully presented, and delivering the kind of knowledgeable, friendly service that keeps our customers coming back.

This is a part-time role to start Thursday, Friday & Saturday (over winter). Additional hours are available depending on business needs, and as Weka continues to grow there is genuine potential for the role to expand to include onsite planting and landscaping work alongside the Weka Landscaping team.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Planning and scheduling nursery work to keep operations running smoothly
  • Propagating plants — taking cuttings, dividing, seed raising, and nurturing stock through to sale
  • Potting and repotting plants, maintaining healthy growing conditions
  • Providing expert customer service and advice to both retail and trade customers
  • Sales and customer engagement — helping people find exactly what they need
  • Liaising with management on stock numbers and requirements
  • Record keeping of stock levels
  • Maintaining stock health and ensuring plants are tidily and attractively presented at all times
  • General nursery housekeeping
  • Managing and guiding nursery hand staff (direct reports)
  • Working confidently both independently and as part of our small team

What We're Looking For

Essential:
  • Genuine passion for plants and horticulture
  • Hands-on plant propagation experience (cuttings, division, seed raising, or similar)
  • Solid plant knowledge across a broad range. Natives, perennials, shrubs & trees
  • Warm, friendly, and approachable manner with customers and colleagues alike
  • A self-starter who notices what needs doing and gets on with it
  • Comfortable working independently as well as part of a small team
  • Clear communicator who shares knowledge openly and generously
  • Honest, reliable, and authentic in how you show up every day
Desirable:
  • Previous experience in a nursery, garden centre, or retail plant environment
  • Experience leading or guiding other team members
  • Interest or experience in onsite planting or landscaping work
  • A relevant horticultural qualification, though passion and hands-on knowledge matter more

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you. Please send us your CV and a short cover letter telling us about your plant knowledge and what draws you to this role.

Applications close Monday 15th June unless position is filled earlier.

Applications are via Trade Me Jobs. We'll be reviewing them as they come in, so don't wait.
