Clinical Engineering Team Leader, Nelson Hospital, Permanent Full-time

We are seeking a dynamic Team Leader - Health Technology Operations to join our Clinical Engineering team. In this key leadership role, you will guide multi-disciplinary teams in delivering safe, efficient, and reliable medical equipment and systems that directly support frontline healthcare services.

About the Role

As Team Leader, you'll be responsible for the day-to-day operational delivery of Health Technology Management (HTM) services across the equipment lifecycle'from procurement and installation to maintenance and decommissioning. You will not only manage and lead others but also remain on the tools, applying your clinical engineering knowledge in a hands-on capacity.

You'll work across departments to ensure that medical devices and systems are safe, functional, compliant, and readily available'supporting clinicians to deliver high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a multi-disciplinary clinical engineering team delivering HTM services.
  • Provide expert guidance on the full lifecycle of health technology: acquisition, calibration, performance checks, repairs, decontamination, decommissioning, and disposal.
  • Coordinate the onboarding, configuration, commissioning, and maintenance of medical equipment and systems.
  • Oversee compliance with NZ regulations, safety standards, and cybersecurity for devices.
  • Lead safety alert and recall management, incident investigation, and risk mitigation.
  • Drive innovation, continuous improvement, and cost-efficiency across operations.
  • Build team capacity and support workforce development and retention strategies.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, external vendors, and national HTM partners.
  • Ensure high-quality service delivery, KPI tracking, and effective contract management.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership, including budgeting and planning.

This is a permanent, full-time role working 80 hours per fortnight (1.0 FTE) , Monday to Friday. You will be based in either Nelson or Blenheim. You will report into the Clinical Engineering Manager based in Canterbury.

Clinical engineering is responsible for managing and maintaining medical equipment and technology in healthcare settings to ensure they function correctly and safely, ultimately contributing to the delivery of quality patient care.

About you / What You'll Bring

Essential:

  • Tertiary qualification in Clinical or Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics, or a related scientific field, or extensive leadership-level clinical engineering experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in clinical engineering, including at least 2 years in a leadership, supervisory, or mentoring role.
  • Deep knowledge of health technology and clinical engineering operations.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop technical teams and deliver complex services.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Registration with the Electrical Workers Registration Board (EWRB) as an Electrical Appliance Serviceperson ' Medical endorsement (or willing to obtain within 24 months).
  • Full New Zealand Driver's License.
  • Understanding and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a health setting.
  • English language proficiency (IELTS 6.0 or higher with no band below 5.5).

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualifications in Health Technology Management or Business.
  • Knowledge of accreditation, audit, and performance measurement frameworks.
  • Experience in 24/7 healthcare environments and national-level HTM collaboration.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in New Zealand or hold a valid NZ visa at the time of applying.
