Malaysian Cuisine Chef - Christchurch

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Malaysian Cuisine Chef to join our team in the heart of Christchurch. This is a full-time, permanent role with a minimum of 30 hours per week. The pay rate is based on experience and will range between $25 and $35 per hour.
The expected start date is early November. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a newly established food business, delivering authentic Malaysian cuisine while contributing to the growth and culture of a start-up operation.
Key Responsibilities:- Create, plan, develop, and prepare authentic Malaysian menus, including seasonal and rotational items using Halal-certified ingredients
- Dishes include but are not limited to: Nasi Lemak, Beef and Chicken Rendang, Char Kuey Teow, Nasi Goreng, Hainanese Chicken Rice and other traditional offerings.
- Ensure all food preparation and handling strictly complies with Halal & other dietary standards
- Maintain high standards of food quality, hygiene, and presentation from sourcing to plating
- Supervise and coordinate kitchen staff (if required), ensuring efficient kitchen operations
- Monitor stock levels, place orders, and manage food cost efficiency
- Train and mentor junior kitchen staff in Malaysian cooking techniques and safety procedures
- Innovate and contribute to menu development based on customer feedback and business goals
- Adapt to the challenges of a new business setup, including flexibility with processes, collaboration with management, and aligning with the company's core values and vision
- Ensure compliance with New Zealand food safety, hygiene, and employment standards
- Work efficiently under pressure, especially during peak service hours, while maintaining a team-oriented approach
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a commercial kitchen, with specialisation in Malaysian cuisine
- Deep familiarity with Malaysian culinary culture, regional dishes, and food preparation practices
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement rotating and seasonal menus
- Formal culinary qualification (e.g., NZQF Level 4 or international equivalent) preferred but not essential
- Experience in kitchen setup, food cost control, and team supervision is advantageous
- Proven ability to adapt and work within a start-up or newly established environment
