- Grounds, Maintenance & Laundry Mō te tūnga | About the roleOffender Employment (OE) is all about giving people in prison the opportunity to gain skills and work experience to increase their chances of obtaining employment after release.
By providing this foundation to success, we reduce reoffending and keep our communities safer.In this varied role as a Grounds Maintenance/Laundry Instructor, you will be working with and providing direct supervision and practical training to the women in our care within the prison environment.A commercial approach to employment training is embraced to ensure effectiveness, covering basic work attendance skills, on-the-job training, and, when feasible, nationally recognized certification of attained skill levels.
You will teach, support, and use your life experiences to help others unleash their talents and be part of something that can be life changing.We see Offender Employment playing an integral role for the people in our care to reclaim their mana and restore themselves to their rightful place in their whānau and society.
By doing this, we can help break the cycle of reoffending and improve the wellbeing and safety of the people in our care, their whānau, and our wider communities, as well as contribute to intergenerational transformation.Instructors have the same classification as Corrections Officers and, as such, complete the same initial training courses.
This will involve on-site training as well as residential training at our National Learning Centre in Upper Hutt, Wellington, to focus on the custodial elements of the position.This role will be a Hybrid role would predominantly work on grounds and support Laundry and back up cover to Distribution.Mōu | About you This rewarding position will suit someone who:with grounds experience like, light lawn care/garden tools and machinery to ensure H&S standards are upheld.Possesses outstanding health & safety practices.Has exceptional communication skills and the ability to develop effective relationships.Has ability to motivate and develop people within a team environment.Can operate effectively in a culturally diverse setting and has an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.Has a full NZ driver licence (or is eligible to obtain one).Experience as an adult educator or NZAQ assessor (4098) is an advantage.General maintenance and building experience preferred but not essential.The latter stages of the recruitment process involve pre-employment checks including a drug test, medical test, physical assessment and police vetting.

Shifts / Operating HoursThe G&M team will operate Monday through Friday for a standard 40-hour workweek.
All industry instructors will work 8-hour shifts, with operations running between 0700 to 1700.Utu ā-tau | SalaryAs of the 1st July 2025, the starting salary for this role will be $72, 514
- $80, 876 per annum.
However, until then the starting salary is $70,014.
Appointment and remuneration will reflect skills and experience relevant to the role.Once in the role, there are opportunities to increase your salary over time up to $90, 322.Mō mātou | About usThis role falls under Auckland Regional Womens Corrections Facility (ARWCF) it is based at Waikeria Prison, in the Satellite Women's Unit.
