Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldier's Hospital, Older Persons

  • Permanent, Full-time 80 hours per fortnight (1.0 FTE)
  • Why work anywhere else!

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

About the Role

We are seeking to employ a dynamic Specialist Geriatrician with great clinical and interpersonal skills to join the Older Persons Health team in Hawke's Bay, where we are transforming the way we care for older people. All subspecialty interests and clinics are welcome, and supported in a collegial working environment both in Older Persons Health and in the wider hospital.

The available position is a full-time role. Candidates interested in a ‘less than full time' role are also strongly encouraged to apply. At Hawke's Bay, we take pride in being a family-friendly department, and promote both full time and part-time working, aiming to balance clinical services with lifestyle choices.

Health NZ Hawke's Bay is accredited by the RACP for Advanced Training of Registrars in Geriatric Medicine. Ongoing development is important to us so an active role in student and junior doctor teaching programmes and education, as well as CME activities within Older Persons Health and the Department of Medicine will be an important and rewarding part of this role.

We have big plans for the future! The Hawkes Bay health sector Clinical Service Plan has highlighted older people as a priority population, and our vision is a whole-of-patient-journey approach to delivering care. Working with the team to improve clinical outcomes for older people will be a key part of this role.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The position is based on the ATR ward, with the intention to rotate between inpatient rehabilitation, orthogeriatrics as well as community older persons services.

The inpatient ATR ward is a 25-30 bed mixed rehabilitation unit, and is the primary rehabilitation unit for Hawkes Bay. The caseload is shared between two consultant geriatricians and is supported by junior doctors. The ward benefits from a strong Multi-Disciplinary Team, with strong links to Medicine, Orthogeriatrics, mental health and community services.

The service works together with the patient and whanau (family) from admission to discharge to provide high-quality care. Rehabilitation programmes are designed to promote mobility, strength, functional gains and overall wellness — tailored to meet individual needs and goals.

Orthogeriatrics is based on the acute orthopaedic ward and supports surgical colleagues with peri-operative management. The Orthogeriatrician works closely with the PARIS team (Patients at Risk of Increased Length of Stay) to support optimal geriatric management of surgical patients.

This role includes a shared outpatient clinic with anaesthetics for high risk surgical patients, as well as being the Clinical Lead for the Fracture Liaison service.

A focus on overall professional and personal development is the strength of our department, in a friendly, warm and informal working culture.

Hawke's Bay offers excellent work-life balance, sun, beaches, exceptional outdoor adventures, great schools, mountains and skiing close by, wonderful food and stunning wineries, vibrant cities and plenty more to boast about. For more information on living and working in Hawke's Bay click HERE
