Health Care Assistant – Cornwall Rest Home

Position: Health Care Assistant – Aged Residential Care
Hours: Permanent, minimum 30 hours per week on a rotating roster (day, evening, and night shifts). Additional hours available as required.
Pay Range: $24.85 – $30.93 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
Reporting to: Registered Nurse / Enrolled Nurse / Manager
Purpose of Position
To deliver quality nursing and home care to residents in accordance with current best and safe practice, ensuring residents’ comfort, dignity, and wellbeing are prioritised at all times. The Health Care Assistant provides hands-on personal care and contributes to a safe, supportive, and homelike environment for all residents.
Key Duties and Responsibilities- Provide personal cares including showering, dressing, grooming, toileting, mobility, and feeding assistance.
- Support residents’ individual care plans, ensuring physical, emotional, and cultural needs are met.
- Participate in meal service, laundry, and light household duties while maintaining infection-control standards.
- Observe, record, and report changes in residents’ condition to the Registered Nurse or Manager.
- Maintain accurate care notes and follow documentation and communication policies.
- Ensure privacy, dignity, and residents’ rights are respected at all times.
- Foster positive relationships with residents, their families/whanau, and colleagues.
- Attend staff meetings and compulsory in-service education, including Fire and Safety training.
- Uphold Cornwall Rest Home’s policies, mission, and philosophy of person-centred care.
- Perform any other duties reasonably required to maximise residents’ safety and wellbeing.
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential:- Prefer one year of experience in aged care.
- Prefer NZQA Level 2 qualification in Health and Wellbeing (Aged Support) or equivalent.
- No experience or qualifications for the right candidate, however you will have exceptional people skills and an aptitude for caring for the elderly.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow care plans and work effectively within a team.
- Commitment to maintaining resident privacy, dignity, and independence.
- A full NZ driver license (or progress towards obtaining)
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual handling tasks safely.
- Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
- Understanding of infection-control procedures, residents’ rights, and advocacy.
- Experience working with Maori and Pasifika residents or an understanding of cultural safety in care.
- Permanent, full-time position with guaranteed minimum 30 hours per week.
- Rotating roster covering morning (7 am – 3 pm), evening (3 pm – 11 pm), and night (11 pm – 7 am) shifts.
- Weekend and public-holiday work required on a rostered basis.
