Head Chef – Kai Whakapai

There’s only one Kai Whakapai — a well-loved, iconic local institution perched on Wanaka’s scenic lakefront. And now, there’s a one-of-a-kind opportunity to take the reins as Head Chef and help Kai continue to soar.

We’re looking for a unicorn among the stars: a creative, organised, and systems-minded Head Chef who’s passionate about working with seasonal produce, regional suppliers, and building menus that excite both our loyal locals and visiting raving fans.

Most importantly, you’ll be a strong leader with excellent people management skills. Someone who empowers their team, leads by example, and thrives in a high-energy, collaborative kitchen. This is a full-time role, embedded within a tight-knit, supportive crew.

Did we mention it’s at Kai Whakapai — and in Wanaka?

About Us

At Kai, we aim to reflect who Wanaka is — its people and its place. We’re proud to be the locals’ local, and to give visitors an authentic taste of this incredible town.
Our menu is built around familiar, comforting dishes with a twist — authentic, seasonal, and beautifully presented. We’re always refining what we do, constantly evolving our offering to surprise and delight.

The kitchen is currently made up of 16 awesome team members, and we’re looking for an inspiring leader to help take our food and team to the next level.

The Vibe

Kai is built by the people, for the people — a place where the team, and the community, feel at home. We’ve got a solid full-time management team, backed by seasonal crew in the peak months. We value passion, empathy, energy, and a touch of cheek — and we work hard to lift each other up, every day.

Individually strong, collectively great — we use the eyes, ears, ideas, and heart of the whole team to create the best experience possible for everyone who walks through the doors.

The Ideal Candidate

You're someone who:
  • Has a sharp eye for detail and a genuine love for leadership and people.
  • Is either an experienced Head/Senior Chef, or a driven Sous Chef ready for the step up.
  • Thrives in a structured yet dynamic kitchen environment.
  • Brings a humble confidence and isn’t afraid to contribute constructively to wider business conversations.
  • Has a deep appreciation for café culture and understands New Zealand café-style cuisine.
The Role — Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver creative, seasonal menus that can be executed efficiently at scale.
  • Manage the kitchen roster, ensuring coverage and keeping wage costs on point.
  • Lead, train, and develop the team — especially important in our seasonal flow.
  • Oversee prep and daily communication to ensure consistency and availability.
  • Introduce and refine kitchen systems to create a smooth, high-functioning space.
  • Maintain recipe documentation and update seasonally.
  • Manage food costings via Loaded.
  • Build strong relationships with suppliers to ensure quality and consistency.
You’ll Need to Be:
  • Calm and efficient under pressure.
  • Flexible and responsive to customer needs.
  • Clear and courteous in your communication.
  • A multitasker who thrives in a fast-paced kitchen.
  • Professional, reliable, and passionate about food.
What’s on Offer
  • Strong remuneration package for the right candidate.
  • A genuinely supportive, people-first culture.
  • A chance to lead in one of Wanaka’s most iconic venues.
  • And, of course — to live and work in one of the most stunning places on the planet.
