Emirates Team New Zealand is seeking two skilled and passionate electronics or mechatronics engineers to aid in the development of sensor and data acquisition systems for our racing yacht.

Data acquisition and analysis play a crucial role in our competition: from controlling yacht systems, to integrating sensors, to enabling designers to make well-informed decisions. We must excel in all these aspects to stay competitive.

The successful candidate will be involved with the specification, development, testing and management of a wide range of electronic and associated software systems and benefit from the experience of an existing team of very skilled engineers.

Despite being a small group with a unique focus, we are serious about sensors and electronics; we are keen to use the latest technologies, and we work to very high standards.

Responsibilities
  • Work with design engineers to understand system requirements.
  • Research system options and test new equipment.
  • Manage the configuration, and calibration, of sensors, including load cells, IMUs, cameras, fibre optic strain sensors, LiDAR.
  • Provide on-the-water support as required.
  • Adapt as required through the campaign!

Depending on your specific skills, you could also be involved in:

  • Design and prototyping in-house electronics and electrical devices.
  • Development of real time camera systems, including those operating underwater.
  • Design of mechanical parts for sensors or sailor input devices, including 3D printed parts.
  • Development of software we run on the yacht for processing sensor data.
  • Creation of software to analyse and debug sensor data.
  • Enhancements to software designed for processing sensor data, for example generating sail shapes from LiDAR point clouds (C++, Python).
  • Development of PLC code that controls the hydraulic systems on the yacht (we use Beckhoff).
  • Design and implementation of systems that incorporate embedded microcontrollers.
Requirements
  • A degree in electronics, mechatronics, or mechanical engineering.
  • If you are an electrical engineer, a good understanding and intuition of mechanical systems, software, calibration and measurement.
  • If you are a mechanical engineer, some experience in electronics and/or software development.
  • Talent, commitment and an enthusiasm for mechatronics.
  • A meticulous eye for detail and a love of being organised.
  • Ability to work and communicate well within a team and to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and work long hours when required.
  • Willingness to travel overseas for periods of up to 4 months.
  • The right to work in New Zealand is preferred, but we will also consider international candidates.
Benefits
  • Work with an extremely talented group of engineers, boat builders and technicians that cover many disciplines.
  • Work in a high focus and intensity sports team where the teamwork and the common objective of winning the America's Cup provides an unmatched level of job satisfaction.
  • Temporary relocation to Naples, Italy and possibly other race venues.
