About the Role

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) on the Medical Ward plays a vital role in supporting the team to deliver high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include assisting with personal care, providing support for patients under observation and engagement, and contributing to the overall functioning of the ward.

This includes tasks such as meal delivery, bed making, restocking supplies, and other duties that help maintain a safe and efficient care environment.

About the Team/Service Location

This role is based in the Medical Ward at Hutt Hospital, a 54-bed ward caring for patients aged 15 and over. The ward provides care for a wide range of medical conditions, including acute, sub-acute, and chronic illnesses. Patients receive support for diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management.

The team also cares for people at the end of life and those choosing Assisted Dying who cannot access this service in the community.

The Medical Ward is a dynamic and fast-paced environment, supported by a friendly and collaborative team. You'll be well-supported by our Associate Charge Nurse Managers (ACNMs), Registered Nurses (RNs), Health Care Assistants (HCAs), and Nurse Educators, all working together to provide excellent patient care.

About you
  • Possess a Health and Wellbeing: Health Assistance Level 3 qualification, or demonstrate a willingness to complete it within an agreed timeframe
  • Exhibit a warm, compassionate, and empathetic approach to patient care
  • Deliver consistently high-quality care across all tasks and interactions
  • Maintain composure in emergency situations, and effectively support patients experiencing confusion
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, whanau, and the healthcare team
  • Work collaboratively and contribute positively as a valued member of the team
