Lead Instructor (Outdoors)

placeWellington calendar_month

At Y Central Outdoors, we’re building our team of instructors to work with us through the coming season. Our focus is on providing amazing camp experiences to school groups and we’re looking for people to join us who are energised by working with children and who have a passion for the outdoors.

There are limited "lead" positions available for people with strong outdoors experience across a variety of locations and/or activities where you can add to that experience by building your leadership skills.

Our team is based at Kaitoke (near Upper Hutt) and in these positions you’ll have a chance to
  • Work in an amazing outdoor environment
  • Build your outdoor recreation skills and experience
  • Be part of a fun, positive team
  • Share your enthusiasm for the outdoors with the kids in our programmes
On a day-to-day basis, you’ll be hands on working with children on activities such as the Giant Swing, Kayaking, and Archery, while also leading a small team of instructors. An outdoors qualification isn’t required, but at least two years’ experience across a variety of locations and activities is important.

A full clean driver’s licence is essential, as you’ll be responsible for transporting groups and gear when needed. If you're able to demonstrate strong leadership qualities that will be an advantage.

Full training for our site activities will be given on the job but as the season progresses you will be expected to help upskill others in the team.

Accommodation on a share basis is available if required, and there’ll be options for subsidised meals prepared by our on-site chef.

We're ready for you to start straight away, and the fixed term position will end in late April 2026. Hours of work will be a minimum of 40 hours per fortnight on a rostered basis.

To be considered for this position, please send us your application. We’ll be interviewing as we receive applications.

Y-Central is committed to Child Protection and the safeguarding of children and young people in our care and it is our expectation that all staff will operate in a way that reflects this intent. The successful applicant will need to return a satisfactory Police Record Check before commencement of employment.

Child protection training will be provided and will be required to be completed before commencement of employment.
