Salary Range: NZD $28.00 to $32.00 per hour (depending on experience)

Espy Café is a well-established and busy café located in Whitianga, known for its quality food, consistent service, and welcoming atmosphere. Operated by REMZ Catering Services, the café has built a strong reputation within the local community and continues to grow.
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Sous Chef to support the Head Chef in managing kitchen operations and maintaining high food quality standards. This is a key role within the kitchen team, ensuring smooth day to day operations in a fast paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Assist the Head Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations
- Prepare and cook a variety of menu items to a consistently high standard
- Support menu planning, including seasonal updates and daily specials
- Supervise kitchen staff and assist with training junior team members
- Ensure food preparation and presentation meet quality and consistency standards
- Monitor stock levels, assist with ordering, and manage inventory
- Maintain portion control and minimize food wastage
- Ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene regulations at all times
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen environment
- Step into a leadership role in the absence of the Head Chef
- At least 3 years’ relevant experience in a commercial kitchen, including experience supporting kitchen leadership
- Experience working in a fast paced café or restaurant environment
- Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene, and kitchen operations
- Experience with stock control, ordering, and inventory management
- Proven ability to assist in supervising and coordinating kitchen staff
- Ability to prepare a wide range of dishes efficiently and consistently
- Relevant hospitality or cookery training is preferred but not essential
- Strong leadership and teamwork skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and manage competing priorities
- Reliable, punctual, and well organized
- Good communication skills and a positive attitude
- Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards
- Shows initiative and ability to take responsibility when required
