Purpose of the Role

BGIS is seeking an experienced Carpentry Foreman ??? to lead and coordinate the day-to-day operations of our Carpentry Division within BGIS Self Perform Trades. Reporting directly to the Delivery Manager, you will rally and motivate your team, manage workflow allocation, and act as the key link between management, schedulers, and field staff—driving a culture of safety, compliance, and operational excellence.

The ideal candidate will be a collaborative, team-oriented leader who thrives under pressure, values quality and safety, and inspires those around them.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, motivate, and oversee a team of carpenters, apprentices, and labourers.
  • Allocate daily work orders and projects, ensuring clear instructions and expectations.
  • Act as the first point of escalation for technical issues or on-site problem-solving.
  • Mentor and coach staff to support skill development and succession planning.
  • Enforce BGIS health, safety, and environmental standards on all worksites.
  • Collaborate with other trades and internal teams to ensure multi-trade coordination.
  • Approve timesheets, leave requests, and job notes while monitoring team productivity.

Education, Experience & Skills

Essential:
  • Trade-qualified Carpenter (NZ Level 4) and Licensed Building Practitioner (preferred).
  • Minimum 10 years’ carpentry experience, with 5+ years in a leadership/foreman role.
  • Strong knowledge of building codes, compliance, and asset protection best practices.
  • Proficiency with digital job management systems (e.g., Simpro, FileMaker) and MS Office.
  • Excellent communication and team leadership skills.
Desirable:
  • Experience working with Kainga Ora, Selwyn District Council, or similar contracts.
  • Additional licenses or training in health and safety or project management.

This position is primarily based on-site at our Christchurch location. After demonstrating consistent performance and meeting key milestones, there may be opportunities for flexible working arrangements.
