Diesel Motor Mechanic

The Diesel Motor Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, ensuring assets are maintained to a safe, compliant, and operationally reliable standard. The role underpins workshop productivity, asset availability, and customer satisfaction while ensuring compliance with New Zealand regulatory, safety, and quality frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
Diesel Mechanical & Diagnostic Activities- Inspect, service, diagnose, and repair diesel engines and associated systems including fuel injection, turbocharging, air intake, cooling, lubrication, and exhaust systems.
- Diagnose faults using advanced diagnostic tools, electronic systems, and manufacturer-specific software.
- Dismantle, overhaul, and reassemble diesel engines and major components in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
- Carry out repairs on diesel-powered light commercial vehicles, heavy vehicles, plant, or machinery as applicable to the workshop scope.
- Service and repair braking systems (including air brakes), steering systems, suspension, driveline, and transmission components.
- Diagnose and rectify faults in electrical and electronic control systems, including sensors, actuators, ECUs, and wiring looms.
- Perform emission-related inspections and repairs to ensure compliance with environmental and regulatory standards.
- Complete job cards, inspection reports, service records, estimates, and invoices accurately using workshop management systems.
- Ensure efficient job sequencing to meet turnaround times and productivity targets.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and diagnostic devices in a serviceable and calibrated condition.
- Ensure all work complies with NZTA / Waka Kotahi requirements, manufacturer standards, and industry best practice.
- Comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act, including hazard identification, risk mitigation, and safe work practices.
- Identify non-conformances, quality issues, or safety risks and escalate appropriately.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including workshop efficiency, safety culture, and quality outcomes.
- Communicate technical findings and repair recommendations clearly to customers and internal stakeholders.
- Liaise with parts suppliers and technical support teams to ensure correct parts selection and technical resolution.
- Provide mentoring or technical guidance to apprentices or junior technicians as required.
- Strong diagnostic capability across diesel mechanical and electronic systems.
- Sound understanding of diesel engine management systems and emissions technologies.
- High level of mechanical precision, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail.
- Effective time management and ability to work under operational pressure.
- Professional communication and customer service orientation.
- Proven experience of minimum 3 or more years as a Diesel Motor Mechanic.
- Experience working on diesel engines in light commercial and heavy vehicle.
- Full, clean NZ Driver License (desirable but not mandatory).
