WHERE
Glenalvon Ltd is a privately owned farming business based in Raukawa, near Hastings. The 1100 ha operation spans three lease blocks of mixed hill terrain and focuses on semi-intensive lamb and cattle finishing. Depending on seasonal conditions and market demand, the farm aims for an annual throughput of approximately 9,000 lambs and up to 900 cattle.
In recent years, the business has developed modern infrastructure, including fencing, laneways, updated water systems, and multiple cattle and sheep yards. They also use Gallagher electronic collars for virtual cattle fencing, currently operating 100 collars with plans to expand to 300.Seasonal downtime occurs from mid-December through February, providing a well-earned summer break.
WHAT
Our clients are seeking a Block Manager to oversee the day-to-day management of a 480ha owned block and a 170ha leased block. The role involves providing input and support across all operations, and for larger tasks, you will work alongside casual staff.

Our client is looking for a motivated individual with the right attitude to step into the Block Manager role, and who is eager to learn the skills required to finish stock to a high standard.The key requirements for success are outlined below.
- Ability to work independently and manage day-to-day operations with minimal supervision.
- Good stockmanship and practical livestock handling skills.
- Experience with fencing, water systems, and general farm infrastructure maintenance.
- 4-5 well controlled working dogs.
- Strong understanding of animal health, with particular focus on worm resistance and proactive monitoring with Faecal egg testing.
- Organisational skills for planning and record-keeping, including familiarity with farm management software (Agri Web) and Google Docs/Sheets.
- Energetic, positive attitude with a willingness to learn and adapt.
- Effective communicator, able to contribute to decision-making and maintain clear records.
- Willingness to engage in professional development and training as required.
- Comfortable using technology for animal and farm management (including Gallagher collars).
- Flexible and proactive approach to workload, accommodating busy and quiet periods on the farm.
- Great support systems in place with owners who are willing to pass on knowledge and upskill their employees.
