We are looking for a committed, experienced support worker to join our team in Taranaki Residential.

About Us

Community Connections is a community-based disability support provider operating across much of the North Island. Our vision is an inclusive Aotearoa where people with disabilities live the lives they choose, are fully valued, and participate as equal citizens.

We are an Equal Employment Opportunities employer and proudly embrace diversity in all its forms. We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the UNCRPD, and the NZ Disability Strategy.

We warmly encourage applications from people with lived experience of disability or mental health, Maori, Pasifika, LGBTQIA+ communities, and people from diverse backgrounds.

About the role

This is a highly complex service requiring a calm, consistent, and resilient approach. The individual supported has significant needs and thrives in a structured environment with clear boundaries. The role also requires good physical fitness and stamina, as he is highly active and enjoys movement-based, outdoor, and high-energy activities.

As part of the core support team, you will support the individual to build independence, confidence, and essential life skills, while ensuring safety and overall wellbeing. You will help create a stable, positive, and empowering home environment by supporting activities aligned with his interests and goals.

Building professional, respectful, and trusting relationships is central to this role. You will ensure the individual’s voice, goals, and preferences remain at the heart of decision-making and contribute to the development and ongoing review of personalised support plans.

Positive engagement with whanau/family and other key people is also essential.

This role will suit someone adaptable, reflective, and committed to continuous learning, who can maintain professionalism, consistency, and values-based practice in complex situations.

You will be rostered for 32 hours of direct support per week, with an additional 8 hours for administration. Shifts may include weekends, overnight stays, and morning support.

Please note: This is a future-dated vacancy, commencing on or after 22 May 2026

About You:

You are a motivated and reliable Support Worker with at least 6 months of hands-on experience supporting individuals with complex needs, including sensory differences and intellectual disabilities. This role is physically demanding, so a good level of fitness and stamina is essential.

You have strong communication skills and are able to build and maintain professional, respectful, and trusting relationships. You are committed to person-centred practice, ensuring the individual’s voice, goals, and preferences guide decision-making, and you contribute to the development and ongoing review of personalised support plans.

You are also comfortable building positive relationships with whanau/family and other key people involved in the individual’s support.

You are adaptable, open to learning, and able to work calmly and consistently in complex situations.

Essential requirements
  • Legal right to work in New Zealand
  • Full, clean driver’s licence
  • Willingness to undergo Oranga Tamariki and Police vetting
  • Health and Wellbeing Level 4 qualification (or higher)
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex or challenging needs
  • Experience working with sensory differences
  • Experience supporting individuals with Autism
