Are you an experienced Project Manager who thrives on delivering complex infrastructure projects from concept to completion? Join Nelson City Council’s Capital Projects team and play a pivotal role in shaping the city’s future through sustainable, high-quality infrastructure.

About the role | Kō tēnei tūranga mahi

As a Project Manager, you’ll lead the design, procurement, and construction of a variety of council projects — ensuring they’re delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest standards. You’ll be part of a collaborative team that values professionalism, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Your day will involve:

  • Leading the planning, design, procurement, and delivery of council infrastructure and capital projects.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, to scope, and to required quality standards.
  • Manage consultants and contractors, including contract documentation, performance, and compliance.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders — including community groups, iwi, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project and organisational efficiency.
  • Support Council’s health and safety culture by leading site safety audits and promoting safe practices.
About you | Ko ngā pūmanawa ō
  • Proven experience in project management, ideally in the civil infrastructure or capital works space.
  • Strong understanding of NZS 3910:2013 and how to manage commercial contracts effectively.
  • A solid grasp of project management methodologies and reporting practices.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • The ability to juggle competing priorities and make sound, timely decisions.
  • A collaborative mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • A Diploma in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification is required, with additional project management qualifications (such as PMP or Prince II Practitioner) highly regarded.
