Purpose of the Role

BGIS is seeking an experienced Painter Foreman to lead our painting teams and ensure high-quality finishes across residential, commercial, and industrial sites.

Reporting to the Internal Delivery Manager, this role is pivotal in coordinating daily operations, maintaining safety standards, and delivering outstanding workmanship for our clients.

You will collaborate closely with site supervisors, clients, other trades, and the wider BGIS team to meet project deadlines while upholding our reputation for quality and professionalism. The ideal candidate will be organised, solutions-focused, safety-conscious, and confident in mentoring others.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and supervise multiple teams of painters and apprentices on-site
  • Plan and allocate daily tasks, ensuring timelines and specifications are met
  • Read and interpret plans, drawings, and job specifications
  • Prepare surfaces and apply a variety of coatings and protective finishes
  • Conduct quality control checks and address defects promptly
  • Maintain records of labour, materials, and project progress
  • Order and manage materials, equipment, and tools
  • Ensure compliance with HSEQ procedures across all work activities
  • Liaise with site supervisors, clients, and subcontractors
  • Train and mentor junior painters and apprentices

Education, Experience & Skills

Essential:
  • Extensive experience in residential, commercial, or industrial painting
  • Proven leadership and communication skills
  • High attention to detail and professional workmanship standards
  • Experience with modern coating systems and surface preparation
  • Ability to scope jobs, plan workloads, and problem-solve on-site
  • Strong commitment to safety and quality assurance
  • Trade Qualification in Painting & Decorating (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 5 years’ painting experience, including 1–2 years in a supervisory role
  • Full NZ Driver’s Licence
Desirable:
  • First Aid Certification
  • Experience working within facilities management or multi-trade environments
  • Additional licenses, training, or supervisory development
  • Workplace Flexibility

This position is based on-site across client locations in Dunedin. As you demonstrate strong performance and familiarity with BGIS systems, there may be opportunities for increased flexibility depending on operational needs.
