Mo Tenei Turanga Mahi - About the role

The Head of Nursing will be at the forefront of vocational education by leading the largest academic portfolio and overseeing the delivery of high-quality nursing education. At the core of our work is a commitment to ensure programmes align with national and international nursing standards, fostering academic excellence, professional integrity, and strong industry connections.

The Head of Nursing is a member of the faculty leadership team and will maintain key relationships with the Nursing Council of New Zealand and other health sector stakeholders, ensuring Ara's nursing qualifications meet accreditation requirements and industry expectations.

The Nursing portfolio is a flagship of Ara's health-related offerings, housing the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) programme, enrolled nursing and various sub-degree nursing-related programmes and training opportunities. The Nursing portfolio is a key component of Ara's contribution to the Te Papa Hauora Health Precinct.

It plays an important role in strengthening ongoing working relationships with Precinct partners, effectively meeting the health workforce training needs of the Canterbury region.

The incoming Head of Nursing will have the opportunity to engage learners while their ability to improve outcomes will be valued, supported and developed along with their understanding and application of kaupapa and matauranga Maori to support the realisation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and our shared vision of transforming lives through education.

Nga Pukenga Me Nga Wheako - Skills and experience

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in nursing or a health-related field
  • Registered Nurse holding (and maintaining) a current practicing certificate with the Nursing Council of New Zealand

Experience required:

  • Significant experience in nursing, nursing education, academic leadership and qualification development, and sound knowledge and experience in the New Zealand vocational education sector
  • Strong understanding of the Nursing Council of New Zealand's accreditation and regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with health sector stakeholders and build strategic partnerships
  • Experience in leading teams, managing budgets, and driving quality improvement initiatives
  • Commitment to equity, inclusivity, and the Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in education and healthcare
  • Familiarity with contemporary learning technologies, digital platforms, and innovative teaching methodologies
  • Demonstrated expertise in the oversight and implementation of projects and/or programmes
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles, assessment methodologies and accreditation and quality assurance frameworks
  • Experience in the development and delivery of high-quality education products, with a focus on equity and holistic assessment
  • Able to competently plan, budget, negotiate, manage and be accountable for resources and resource deployment and utilisation to achieve required outputs and outcomes
  • Strength in using sophisticated administrative processes and management information associated with complex environments
  • Experience in fostering strong industry, community, and iwi-Maori partnerships
  • Demonstrated appreciation of the necessity for working with existing processes and standards while being prepared to question them at appropriate times and places
  • Fundamentally understands and applies the principles of continuous improvement in all activities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technology and its potential including being digitally literate in Office systems and able to quickly learn and apply Ara specific electronic systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety management practices
  • Excellent report writing skills and understanding of different audiences and writing styles
