The New Zealand Customs Service (Customs) is responsible for facilitating the legitimate movement of people and goods across the border, supporting trade, managing border risks and collecting customs and excise revenue on behalf of the Crown.An opportunity is available for Policy Analysts / Senior Policy Analysts to join the International team at Customs, based in either our Wellington or Auckland offices.As an analyst, you will be responsible for the engagement with countries within a specific geographic region, or international organisation.

You will focus on developing and maintaining relationships with key agencies in your region (or organisation) and work closely with our offshore liaison officers.To be successful in this position you'll need to demonstrate the following skills and attributes: attention to detail exceptional verbal and written communication skills strong negotiation skills relationship management skills an ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines strategic thinking the ability to be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance to Top Secret.Experience or knowledge of international relations would be highly advantageous for this role, but candidates from a range of backgrounds will be considered.This role offers a great deal of variety, so you'll need to be able to self-manage while being responsive to overseas counterparts, and to the Customs Executive.The team delivers at a range of levels, including providing strategic advice to inform our international engagement and supporting the coordination of international events hosted in New Zealand.

This includes preparing briefs and supporting event planning and logistics. How to apply…To join Customs, you must be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident* and be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate level of security clearance to Top Secret level. Due to the nature of Customs work you must have a clear Police record.

Successful applicants are also required to pass a drug test. (*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in New Zealand at time of application.OR a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 10 years and resides in New Zealand at time of application but may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past ten years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, United Kingdom or the United States of America.
