Korero mo te turanga - About the role

A highly sought after position has become vacant due to promotion for a specialist Psycho-Geriatrician (Psychiatrist of Old Age) working for the Mental Health Service for Older People (MHSOP) at Te Whatu Ora Taranaki.

Psychogeriatric experience preferred but would consider a qualified psychiatrist wanting to pursue old age training. Also willing to consider stage 3 trainees in old age psychiatry wanting to complete their training here and stay for an SMO role.
This is a four day per week role however interest in full time work will definitely be considered.

The MHSOP team has a strong focus on community care but also has access to four beds within the acute mental health inpatient area. The team provides specialist assessment and treatment outpatient clinics as well as home-based and residential care-based interventions.
The team consists of 3 psychogeriatricians, psychologists, mental health nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and administration support.

The service has close links with the Older Peoples Health Rehabilitation service.

You will join a wider team of 14 psychiatrists among the other arms of the mental health service, working alongside a dedicated team of medical, nursing and allied health staff.

The Mental Health and Addictions service (MHAS) hosts medical students from the University of Auckland. While here you will enjoy the benefits of teaching and supervising years 5 and 6, while having access to the University's up-to-date resources.

Taranaki MHAS is also a training site for up to 6 registrars working towards RANZCP fellowship. You will have the opportunity to be involved in registrar education and training.

The MHAS provides a wide range of specialist services within the Taranaki region that include:

A 23-bed acute inpatient unit comprising 15 Adult, 4 Older Persons and 7 Intensive/high needs beds.
Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
Mental Health Services for Older people.
Alcohol and Drug Services.
North and South Taranaki Community Mental Health Teams
A Co-Response Team
A Mental Health Assessment Team (Crisis)

As part of the MHAS service, you will be expected to:

Provide consultant services to people requiring specialist care.
Interact daily with other departments.
Mentor junior medical staff attached to the service.
Have the ability to work in a range of settings i.e. inpatient, outpatient and community settings inclusive of crisis work
Cover for colleagues in their absence.
Participate in an on-call 1:10 roster.
