Job Title: Senior Expedition Whitewater Canoe Instructor

Reports to: NOLS New Zealand Program Director / NOLS Field Staffing Office

Job Objective:
To lead up to 10 students on a 4-week whitewater canoe expedition on a Class 3 river, including teaching whitewater canoe skills, leadership, risk management, camp skills, wilderness medicine, and environmental studies, all the while ensuring a high standard of health and safety is maintained.

Work Location:
Work will be undertaken at NOLS New Zealand (4 Serpentine River Road, Aniseed Valley, Richmond, Tasman) and on the Waiau Toa / Clarence River, Canterbury, including travel between the two locations.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
 •  Whitewater canoe qualifications covering at least Class 3 water and at least 150 days experience professionally leading extended remote area trips, of which at least 100 days are paddling loaded expedition canoes.
 •  Extensive experience (210+ days) leading expedition whitewater trips (at least 100 days of which are in loaded expedition canoes) with novice students on at least Class 3 rivers for expedition based educational organisations may replace the requirement for relevant qualifications and experience listed above.
 •  Experience professionally leading expeditions of at least 14 days in length with novices, and supervising colleagues.
 •  Swift water/River rescue certification and an outdoor/remote area first aid certification.
 •  Experience teaching outdoor-based curriculum focussed on leadership, risk management, equity and inclusion, wilderness first aid and environmental studies.

Key responsibilities include:
 •  Lead a team of two or three whitewater canoe instructors running a whitewater canoe expedition on the Waiau Toa / Clarence River, with up to 10 novice students.
 •  With co-instructors, prepare all canoe and camping equipment ensuring it is in suitable condition for the expedition.
 •  Hold risk management responsibility for on-water decisions and group management.
 •  Coordinate the delivery of coherent and structured curriculum on leadership, camp skills, whitewater canoe skills, wilderness medicine and environmental studies that is consistent with NOLS curriculum resources. With co-instructors, deliver effective and inspiring classes.
 •  Create, manage, and maintain a Positive Learning Environment that optimises the opportunity for every student to be themselves and learn. With co-instructors, identify and manage student behaviour to interrupt disruptive or corrosive behaviour that impedes others’ learning experience.
 •  Effectively facilitate briefing and debriefing sessions for students and instructors to accelerate learning and enjoyment.
 •  Use communication devices such as satellite phones and personal locator beacons to communicate with the NOLS New Zealand branch when necessary, and coordinate emergency and evacuation procedures if required.
 •  Ensure all activities are undertaken in accordance with NOLS Accepted Field Practices documentation, and in accordance with the NOLS Safety Management Plan.
 •  Complete all course-related paperwork to document trip events, including any incidents, mishaps, near misses, achievements, and student/instructor challenges.
 •  Foster a fun and inspiring atmosphere for all members of the expedition.

Working Conditions: This position is a 27-day fixed term position between 21 October 2024 and 16 November 2024.

Hourly rate for this position is NZ$26.69 per hour.

Minimum weekly work will be 70 hours and the maximum will be 112 hours (including on-call sleepover hours) from Monday to Sunday inclusive.
