Strategic Assets Lead
In partnership with Whanganui District Council

Whanganui | Leadership role | Infrastructure & Community Assets

Beyond Recruitment is proud to be partnering with Whanganui District Council to appoint a Strategic Assets Lead – a senior role where long-term thinking, data-driven insight, and community impact come together.

This is an opportunity to step into a trusted leadership position within Council’s Infrastructure group, shaping how vital assets are managed, invested in, and sustained for current and future generations.

The opportunity

As Strategic Assets Lead, you’ll play a pivotal role in translating complex asset data into practical, strategic advice that informs Council decision-making. Leading a small team of asset management professionals, you’ll guide long-term asset strategies aligned to the Long-Term Plan while ensuring value, resilience, and service outcomes for the Whanganui community.

You’ll operate at both a strategic and operational level, influencing planning, supporting investment decisions, and ensuring asset performance, condition, and lifecycle considerations are front and centre.

Key responsibilities

In this role you will:

  • Provide strategic asset management advice across Council and the Infrastructure group
  • Develop and maintain long-term asset strategies aligned with Council priorities
  • Analyse asset condition, performance, and cost data to deliver clear, decision-ready insights
  • Lead asset improvement and renewal programmes, prioritised by risk, cost, and community impact
  • Support community-centric decision-making, translating technical information into accessible advice
  • Partner closely with internal leaders, elected members, and external stakeholders
  • Lead, develop, and motivate a high-performing asset management team

About you

We’re interested in hearing from asset management professionals who bring both technical depth and strategic perspective. You’ll likely offer:

  • A tertiary qualification in asset management or a related discipline
  • At least 5 years’ experience in asset management (community assets and/or roading preferred)
  • Strong analytical capability with the ability to turn data into meaningful insights
  • Experience providing advice that supports investment, planning, and long-term decision-making
  • Proven stakeholder engagement skills and the confidence to act as a trusted advisor
  • Leadership experience (or readiness to step into a people leadership role)
  • Knowledge of the local government environment (beneficial, but not essential)

Why Whanganui District Council?

Whanganui District Council is guided by a clear vision: “An energised, united and thriving district offering abundant opportunities for everyone.”

You’ll be part of an organisation that values collaboration, encourages innovation, and is deeply connected to its community. This role offers genuine influence, purpose, and the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy through smart, sustainable asset management.
