The opportunity
Sanford is one of New Zealand's largest seafood company, proudly operating for over 100 years with a commitment to sustainability, innovation, and people. We are looking for a practical, hands-on Health & Safety Advisor to join our Aquaculture team.
This role is based at our Bluff Processing Site and provides specialist health and safety support across the salmon value chain — including processing, hatchery operations, farming services, and occasional support for salmon farm operations alongside the Aquaculture Lead.
This is an ideal opportunity for a H&S professional who thrives in operational environments, enjoys working closely with frontline teams, and wants to make a real difference in a dynamic and fast-paced industry.
Key responsibilities- Provide day-to-day health and safety support for the Bluff Processing Site, Hatchery, and Farming Services operations.
- Partner with operational leaders to ensure leader-led safety practices and a strong culture of risk ownership.
- Support the implementation and monitoring of Sanford's critical risk programme and annual H&S plan initiatives.
- Conduct site visits, audits, and inspections to identify hazards and verify controls.
- Deliver and support training, inductions, and toolbox talks to build H&S capability at all levels.
- Assist in the investigation of incidents and support leaders to implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with the Aquaculture Lead and H&S Operations team to support salmon farm operations as required.
- Maintain accurate reporting and documentation within Sanford's safety management systems.
- Experience in health & safety advisory or coordination roles, ideally in manufacturing, aquaculture, seafood, or other high-risk operational industries.
- Solid understanding of NZ health and safety legislation and practical application in operational environments.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to coach and influence frontline teams.
- Proactive and solutions-focused, with strong attention to detail.
- Confidence to work independently while being part of a wider H&S team.
- Relevant H&S qualification (e.g., NZ Certificate in Workplace Health & Safety, or equivalent) preferred.
- A current driver's licence and flexibility to travel occasionally between sites.
- Join our organisation with a deep connection to sustainability and the ocean.
- Work with diverse operations — from hatcheries and farms to processing and support services.
- Collaborate with a passionate, supportive team of safety leaders and advisors.
- Opportunity for growth and development within Sanford's expanding health and safety function.
