  • What you'll do As the Group Manager
  • Clinical and Science Advisory, you'll sit at the centre of the Ministry's clinical and science capability within the Strategy and Policy Group- connecting expert advice, evidence, and insight to shape strategy, strengthen policy, and support high-quality decision-making across the health system.
Working closely with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Science Advisor, you'll lead a high-trust portfolio spanning the Chief Clinical Officers (nursing, allied health and maternity), clinical advisors, the Health Science team, and the Ministry's library services
  • helping ensure clinical and scientific input is strong, coherent, and influential across the Ministry and sector.
You will work closely with the Chief Science Advisor to establish effective relationships and work programmes relating to health research priorities and the broader science system.

You will also work closely with the Chief Clinical Officers and key agencies and institutions in relation to the systems for clinical governance and quality and safety, as well as leading key programmes of work on clinical issues where the Ministry is a convenor as lead advisor to the Ministers of Health.

Set strategic direction for the Clinical and Science Advisory Unit
  • leading planning and delivery that supports the Deputy Director-General and advances clinical and scientific priorities across the Group and to support the wider Ministry.Lift system leadership through evidence and clinical insight, supporting the wider Group with high-quality, evidence-based, clinically informed advice that helps shape the future of the health system and deliver Government priorities.Build a cohesive, prioritised work programme across clinical, science, and library services
  • aligning efforts with broader clinical expertise across the Ministry and Health NZ.Oversee delivery of key programmes of work, ensuring initiatives across the Group and wider Ministry are well planned and drive progress against Ministry and Government objectives.Champion an evidence-based, continuously improving culture, enabling consistent, high-quality clinical and scientific advice to underpin decision-making and policy development.Contribute to the governance of Strategy and Policy as part of the Senior Leadership Team, driving the strategic direction for the health system.This role offers the opportunity to shape New Zealand's health system and lead work that is critical to our wellbeing and prosperity.

  • What You'll Bring A relevant tertiary qualification and/or equivalent senior experience, with a strong foundation in clinical, science, or analytical disciplines.Senior leadership experience in complex systems and environments, including leading leaders and multidisciplinary clinical and/or science teams.Proven ability to provide strategic, high'quality advice that informs policy and decision'making, underpinned by sound judgement and technical credibility.Deep understanding of the machinery of government, including operating at the political interface, managing risk, and aligning work to government priorities.Strong influencing and communication capability, combined with resilience, cultural competence, and a demonstrated commitment to equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
