Join Our Benchmark of Excellence as a Relieving Teacher

At Lumsden Kindergarten, we pride ourselves on being recognised as a centre of excellence, known for providing high-quality care and education to tamariki and whanau. We are looking for a reliable, passionate, and proactive Relieving Teacher to join our supportive team on a casual, as-needed basis.

About the Role

Being a reliever is about reliability and commitment. When we call, we need someone we can count on to turn up and contribute meaningfully. This role is not just about “watching children”—we expect our relievers to engage, be present, and support the team in delivering our Benchmark of Excellence.

Hours are generally between 8:00am and 5:00pm, and while this is a casual role, it would suit someone seeking part-time or flexible work who is available during these hours.

This job is ONLY open to those currently living in Hawkes Bay New Zealand.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who:
  • Has experience working with children under five years of age (excluding their own).
  • Ideally, has some experience supporting children with diverse learning needs.
  • Understands the importance of being present and intentional in their interactions with children.
  • Is comfortable planning experiences and supporting meaningful learning moments.
  • Is a team player, able to adapt to different environments and contribute positively to our teaching team.
  • Wants to work in a centre that expects high standards and provides support to reach them.
While formal Early Childhood Education (ECE) qualifications are not required for this role, candidates who have ECE experience or training will be considered very favourably.

This position would be a perfect fit for someone studying in the education field who is looking for flexible work while completing their studies.

What You Can Expect
  • To work in a centre that is well-resourced, professional, and values excellence.
  • To be part of a team where intentional teaching, engagement, and high-quality practice are expected every day.
  • To be supported by a strong leadership team and colleagues who are committed to delivering the best for tamariki and whanau.

Please note: As this is a relieving position, pay parity steps are not applied to this role.

Our Values and Standards

At Lumsden Kindergarten, our values and standards guide everything we do. We are intentional teachers who believe in creating meaningful learning experiences, fostering independence, and supporting lifelong learning. We are looking for applicants who connect with our vision and want to contribute—not “tyre kickers.” Only serious applicants who are genuinely committed to this mahi should apply.
