The Office sits within the Public Service Commission.
The creation of the Office within a central Government agency was a key recommendation in the Royal Commission's final report, Whanaketia
  • through pain and trauma, from darkness to light.

The Crown Response Office plays an important strategic, advisory and coordination role to ensure the Crown is joined up and focused on the right priorities.

We currently have a newly created fixed term or secondment opportunity for a Principal Advisor in our Redress System Strategy team until 30 June 2026.

The Principal Advisor Redress Programme plays a critical leadership and analytical role within the Redress System Strategy function, leading interagency projects and developing key policy, tools and frameworks that support delivery of the Crown's redress system for survivors of abuse in care.This role is responsible for delivering complex cross-agency work by leading collaborative working groups, extracting subject matter expertise from agency representatives, and converting that input into high-quality, well-reasoned and implementable deliverables.

These may include operational frameworks, policies, implementation tools, and briefings that enable senior leaders and Ministers to make informed decisions.
This is a highly analytical and writing-intensive role that bridges policy and delivery, with a focus on solutions that work across government systems.Key responsibilities include:Lead and manage complex cross-agency workstreams focused on redress system improvements, including design and delivery of tools, policies and frameworks that support implementation of Cabinet decisions.Coordinate and facilitate interagency working groups to draw out subject matter expertise and co-develop deliverables.Own and deliver end-to-end pieces of work that are high-priority, often sensitive, and require independent judgement and cross-agency collaboration.Ensure programme activities are strategically aligned and operationally integrated into the wider redress system design.Produce high-quality written outputs including strategic advice, operational guidance, legal or financial frameworks, and implementation tools.Translate complex, nuanced, and technical input into succinct and accessible formats suitable for senior leaders and Ministers.Provide advice that anticipates risks, identifies trade-offs, and supports implementation in real-world agency settings.Use data, insights and stakeholder feedback to inform the continuous improvement of redress system components.Lead or represent the Redress Programme in cross-agency forums and working groups.Apply collaborative engagement and principled negotiation techniques to reach consensus on sensitive or complex redress matters.You will bring:Extensive experience in cross-agency programme delivery, policy implementation, or operational policy development in a public sector environment.Demonstrated ability to lead and deliver complex, ambiguous work with a high degree of autonomy.Expert writing and analytical skills
  • including the ability to translate diverse inputs into succinct, high-quality documents.Strong stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills, particularly across agency boundaries and at senior levels.Proven ability to design implementation-ready frameworks, tools, and operational policies.Experience delivering work in politically sensitive, fast-moving and multi-stakeholder contexts.Sound judgement and political nous.Experience working with survivors or marginalised communities, or in trauma-informed settings.Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of work.Knowledge of te ao Māori, tikanga and kawa and a sound understanding of the implications of Te Tiriti on today's society and public service.To apply for this role you must have the ability to live and work in New Zealand.This position is a fixed term or secondment opportunity to 30 June 2026.The full time salary for this role usually falls between $131,082
