Drainlayer / Leading Hand Drainlayer

Groundworks is looking for a Drainlayer / Leading Hand Drainlayer to join our team.

We're a Wellington-based civil construction company delivering three waters, subdivisions, roading, and infrastructure projects across the Wellington region. We take pride in doing quality work, backing our people, and building teams of capable operators and tradespeople who get things done.

This role is suited to someone who is more than just a drainlayer. We're looking for an A player—someone who takes ownership, leads by example, and wants to be part of a high-performing team. Whether you're already leading crews or ready to step up into a leadership role, we'd like to hear from you.

What you'll be doing
Installing stormwater, wastewater, and water reticulation infrastructure
Leading small crews and coordinating daily site activities
Reading plans and ensuring work is completed to specification
Working alongside operators and labourers to deliver projects safely and efficiently
Maintaining high standards of workmanship, productivity, and site safety
Assisting with testing, commissioning, and project handovers
Helping develop less experienced team members
What we're looking for
Qualified Drainlayer or equivalent industry experience
Proven ability to lead by example and drive productivity on site
Strong understanding of drainage construction and civil infrastructure works
Ability to read and interpret plans
Current NZ Driver Licence (Class 2 or WTR endorsements advantageous)
Reliable, self-motivated, and solutions-focused
Someone who takes pride in their work and holds themselves to a high standard
The type of person who succeeds at Groundworks
Turns up every day ready to contribute
Looks for solutions instead of problems
Takes ownership of their work
Respects their team, clients, and the public
Wants to continually improve themselves and those around them
Understands that quality, productivity, and safety all matter
What's on offer
Competitive remuneration based on experience and capability
Variety of work across three waters, civil infrastructure, and land development projects
Modern plant, equipment, and tools
Training and development opportunities
A genuine opportunity to grow into larger leadership responsibilities

A team that values hard work, accountability, and getting the job done right

If you're looking for just another job, we're probably not the right fit. If you're a capable drainlayer who wants to be part of a strong team, take ownership of your work, and help deliver quality projects, we'd like to hear from you.
