Qualified Teacher/Kaiako

placeNew Plymouth calendar_month

One of our much-loved kaiako is flying the nest on an exciting overseas adventure, opening up a special opportunity for a passionate and qualified teacher to join our whanau here at Piccolo Preschool.

Nau mai, haere mai.

Piccolo Preschool is a small, heart-led early childhood centre in the middle of Ngamotu / New Plymouth. We’re just a short stroll from Pukekura Park and the moana, and our space is full of natural beauty, open-ended resources, and a whole lot of aroha.

We care and educate for tamariki aged 2 to 5, and we follow a Reggio-inspired approach—focusing on creativity, connection, and slow, meaningful learning. Small ratios and an unhurried pace mean we can truly get to know each child and support them to thrive.

Our kaupapa is grounded in four core values:
  • Pono / Integrity – being true to ourselves, our tamariki, and our practice
  • Whanaungatanga / Relationships – nurturing strong, trusting connections with others
  • Kaitiakitanga / Nurture – caring for people, place, and taonga
  • Whakamana / Growth – uplifting and supporting each person’s potential
These aren’t just words to us; they shape how we teach, how we work together, and how we show up each day.

About the role

We’re on the lookout for a qualified, registered early childhood kaiako to join our team 32 hours a week. This is a permanent position with both teaching and some shared leadership responsibilities.

You’ll help guide our curriculum, support tamariki in their everyday play and exploration, and work closely with whanau and the wider team.

We’re part of the ECE Pay Parity scheme, so your pay will reflect your experience and qualifications.

We don’t expect perfection, but we are looking for someone who:
  • Is qualified and certified (or nearly there)
  • Has solid experience in ECE, ideally with Reggio or nature-based influences
  • Communicates openly and works well as part of a team
  • Has a genuine respect for tamariki and sees teaching as a shared journey
  • Is comfortable with basic admin and enjoys taking initiative
  • Brings warmth, steadiness, and humour to their work

What it’s like to work here

We’re a small team, and we really do support each other. There’s time for laughter, honest korero, and shared problem-solving. Decisions are made together, and everyone has a voice.
We know that high-quality teaching doesn’t come from rushing or overloading staff. Our structure gives you time for planning, reflection, and connection—with your colleagues, tamariki, and whanau.
