Psychologist - Paediatric Diabetes

About the Role
This role is part of Allied Health and is embedded within the Child Health team, working with the Paediatric Diabetes Service. You will provide developmentally informed psychological care for children and young people with diabetes and their whanau.Working closely with our multidisciplinary team, you'll support adjustment, wellbeing, adherence, and mental health across the diabetes journey from diagnosis through adolescence. You will contribute psychological expertise to clinics and care planning, help build a culturally safe and equity'focused service, and play a key role in developing resources and enhancing psychologically informed diabetes care.
In this role you will:
- Deliver psychological assessment, formulation and intervention that reflect developmental stage and diabetes'specific needs
- Provide support at new'diagnosis clinics, and contribute to resources and group programmes for whanau and the wider diabetes community
- Offer psychological consultation to the multidisciplinary team, strengthening understanding of behaviour, engagement, and family dynamics
- Identify children and whanau who may benefit from psychology input and coordinate referrals or transitions, including to adult services
- Maintain high'quality documentation and contribute to service planning, equity actions, and continuous improvement
About the Team
The Paediatric Diabetes team provides evidence'based care for children and young people with Type 1 and other forms of diabetes. The service sits within Child Health and includes paediatric endocrinologists, diabetes nurse specialists, dietitians, psychology, social work, and Maori health kaimahi, working closely alongside inpatient teams and community supports.The psychology role is supported by the Paediatric Consult Liaison team for peer case supervision and psychiatry input.
About You
You are a compassionate, skilled clinician who brings strong formulation, communication, and collaboration skills to a multidisciplinary environment. You're motivated by improving outcomes for children and young people with chronic health conditions and are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equity.
You will bring:
- Registration (or eligibility) as a Psychologist in Aotearoa New Zealand
- A relevant postgraduate qualification (Clinical Psychology, or Child Family / Developmental / Educational scope)
- Experience supporting children/young people, ideally within a chronic illness or health setting
- Strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, cultural safety, and equitable practice
- Knowledge of relevant ethical and professional legislation, and DSM'5
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and consultation skills
- Minimum 3 years experience working as a Psychologist preferred
- Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a fast'paced multidisciplinary service
