About the Role
As a Genetic Pathologist (Senior Medical Officer) at Canterbury Health Laboratories (www.chl.co.nz), you will play a critical role in the diagnostic interpretation and reporting of genetic and genomic testing to support patient care across the health system.
Based at Christchurch Hospital campus, the South Island's largest tertiary centre, you will work closely with our scientific and technical team and consult with specialist clinical teams across the campus and nationally. This new fixed term role has been created as we are leading a clinical pilot - evaluating whole genome sequencing and comprehensive genomic profiling of cancer in the NZ public health system.
Your role will focus on laboratory-based genomic medicine, including interpretation of molecular and cytogenetic results, contribution to test development and quality assurance, and provision of expert advice to clinical services. You will contribute to service development as genomic technologies and digital applications continue to evolve in germline and somatic testing.Opportunities exist for teaching, research, and involvement in regional and national genomic initiatives.
About the Team / Service / Location
The Genetics Section at Canterbury Health Laboratories is part of Te Whatu Ora - Waitaha Canterbury and works in close partnership with regional laboratories, clinical services, and national clinical networks. We offer an extensive portfolio of tests for a wide range of clinical applications including single gene and mitochondrial disorders, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and molecular oncology/haematology.The laboratory is well equipped with the latest technology and has established national and international research collaborations. Our service provides district, regional and national diagnostic testing services.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Vocational registration (or eligibility) with the Medical Council of New Zealand in Genetic Pathology or another relevant pathology scope with recognised subspecialty expertise in genetic / molecular pathology
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA) or equivalent
- Demonstrated expertise in genetic, genomic, and/or molecular pathology diagnostics
- Strong analytical and interpretative skills with a commitment to quality and patient safety
- A collaborative approach to multidisciplinary working and service development
- Interest in teaching, research, or innovation in genomic medicine (desirable)
