About the Role Obstetric Medicine

Obstetric medicine is an exciting field of Internal Medicine that focuses on the care of pregnant women with medical disorders. For additional information please visit the Society of Obstetric Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (SOMANZ) page.

SOMANZ offers the Obstetric Medicine Certificate to Advanced Trainees of the RACP who complete Obstetric Medicine training requirements, including 12 months of Obstetric Medicine during Advanced Training. For further information on Advanced Training in New Zealand please visit the RACP website.

Medicine Registrar Runs

Medicine Registrar runs in the Auckland region are six months in length, following which you may rotate into a different run. Example run descriptions for the 2025 training year can be viewed on the Auckland Doctors website. As an Obstetric Medicine Registrar you will take part in acute medicine registrar rosters for weekend shifts and weekend night shifts only.

About the Team/Service/ Location Auckland is the only Obstetric Medicine trainee site in New Zealand.

About you Advanced Training Run in Obstetric Medicine towards the Obstetric Medicine Certificate

You will need to have passed the FRACP written exam or be registered to sit the clinical exam for 2025.

These positions will only be offered to those who have passed the clinical exam and completed basic training. For those completing the exam later this year and should you not pass the exam, you will no longer be eligible for advanced training position and you may be considered for a run allocation.

Eligible for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Support and assistance with this process is provided.

Six month allocations for those interested in obstetric medicine experience as part of their training in general medicine, specialty training or general practice

Must be at least a Basic Trainee Registrar with the RACP.

Important: Even if you are a current RMO employee in the Auckland region seeking a six month allocation or applying for advanced training in Obstetric Medicine you will need to formally apply.
