Job Summary

The Produce Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operation, buying, presentation, and financial performance of the Produce Department. This hands-on role involves planning, selecting, sourcing, and purchasing fresh produce for retail sale.

Duties include analysing demand, negotiating with suppliers on price and quality, managing inventory levels, setting pricing strategies, and controlling costs to ensure continuity of supply and strong commercial performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Select, order, and purchase fresh produce from approved suppliers by analysing sales data, stock levels, and forecast demand.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Produce Department to ensure product quality, availability, and presentation standards are consistently met.
  • Plan and coordinate promotional activities aligned with store buying strategies and seasonal availability.
  • Rotate fresh produce daily using FIFO methods to maintain quality and minimise spoilage.
  • Negotiate prices, delivery terms, and supply arrangements with distributors to secure favourable purchasing outcomes.
  • Monitor and manage departmental gross profit (GP) in line with store targets.
  • Monitor inventory levels, turnover, and stock performance to optimise ordering processes and ensure continuity of supply.
  • Ensure all produce complies with Fresh Choice quality standards and New Zealand food safety and hygiene regulations.
  • Conduct regular stocktakes and maintain accurate inventory records to support purchasing decisions.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant work area by following workplace health and safety policies and food safety regulations.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Minimum three (3) years’ relevant experience or at least a relevant level 4 qualification.
  • Practical understanding of fresh produce ordering, availability, and seasonal fluctuations in a retail supermarket environment is advantageous.
  • Proven ability to analyse sales data, manage stock levels, and control inventory effectively.
  • Experience negotiating with suppliers and managing commercial relationships also preferable.
  • Strong computer literacy, with confidence using ordering systems, inventory management software, and general retail systems; proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is also required.
  • Strong attention to detail with a commitment to product freshness, quality, and presentation.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and manage time effectively in a fast-paced retail environment.
  • Previous experience leading or managing a department is desirable.

Hours of Work

This is a permanent, full-time position working guaranteed 37.5 hours per week, rostered across the trading week, including weekends as required.
