The Whakapapa whanau are a small but ambitious team operating year-round on the northern slopes of Mt Ruapehu.
In winter, Whakapapa transforms into one of New Zealand’s largest ski areas, welcoming guests from across New Zealand and around the world. In summer, our iconic Sky Waka gondola provides access to a spectacular alpine sightseeing experience in the heart of Tongariro National Park.
For many of our guests, Whakapapa is more than a destination, it’s a place woven into family traditions and lifelong memories, often across multiple generations.
Mo te tunga | About the role
No two days are the same at Whakapapa.
We’re looking for a qualified electrician to join our maintenance team and help keep critical infrastructure and mountain operations running safely and reliably year-round.
This is not your standard electrical role. One day you could be fault-finding and repairing infrastructure, the next you could be assisting with snowmaking installations in alpine terrain.
Key responsibilities include:- Carrying out electrical maintenance in accordance with all relevant legislation and standards
- Installation, testing, troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems and equipment
- Testing and tagging of equipment
- Supporting maintenance projects across the wider operation
- Assisting with parts and supply ordering
- Liaising with suppliers and on-site contractors
- Completing operational checks and maintaining high safety and operational standards
While electrical work will be your primary focus, we value team players who are willing to support wider maintenance activities when required.

You’ll be someone who enjoys practical problem solving, takes pride in high-quality work, and thrives in a dynamic team environment.
You will ideally bring:- A recognised electrical qualification and current New Zealand registration (or the ability to obtain registration)
- Broad maintenance experience, with some hydraulic and mechanical knowledge advantageous
- Strong troubleshooting and fault-finding capability
- The ability to build positive working relationships with a wide range of people
- A willingness to work in a unique alpine environment where weather and conditions can change quickly
- A genuine passion for the outdoors and mountain environments
